CADIZ -- Matt Voll and Dave Shutt became the newest members inducted into the District 5 Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame when they were honored during the Hall of Fame Banquet at Harrison Central High School on Sunday.

Shutt from Garaway and Voll from New Philadelphia have had outstanding District 5 coaching careers.

A look at their accomplishments are as follows:

Voll is a basketball lifer

Voll is a native of Marion. He is the son of Sue Granger (Mother) and Fran and Marty (Father-Stepmother) Voll. He is a 1988 graduate of Marion Pleasant High School where he played basketball for OHSBCA HOF Coach Stan Kirby and Coach Bob Elsass. Voll grew up with his two brothers, Joe Voll and Mike Voll who are both successful high school teachers and coaches in western Ohio.

At a young age, Voll spent many summer hours at the Delphos St. John’s Basketball Camps working and playing for two legendary high school basketball coaches, Bob Arnzen and Fran Voll. Coach Bob Arnzen, who ranks eighth on the Ohio High School Boys Basketball Coaching All-Time Wins with 676 victories, coached for 42 years at Delphos St. John’s.

Meanwhile, Coach Fran Voll built a girls basketball dynasty at Delphos St. John’s where his teams won (three) State Championships. He recorded an overall record (208-17) with a winning percentage of 92% which is unmatched in the history of Ohio High School Basketball. Coach Fran Voll continued his HOF coaching successes at Bowling Green State University and Central Michigan University.

Because of Voll’s basketball upbringing, he knew he wanted to follow the path of coaching.

Voll is a 1993 graduate of Bowling Green State University. During his college years, he started his coaching career in 1992-93 as a Volunteer Boys Varsity Assistant Coach at Bowling Green High School. He worked under Head Coach Mike Vannett at BGHS for (2) years before he took his first teaching/coaching position in Eastern Ohio at West Holmes High School in 1994.

After two years serving as the Boys Varsity Assistant and JV Coach at West Holmes, he found his first head coaching job in Western Ohio at Waynesfield-Goshen High School. After (three) years at WGHS, he was called back to West Holmes High School to coach the Lady Knights and take over reins of the powerhouse girls basketball program.

Ever since 1999, Voll has remained in the District 5 Coaches Association with head coaching stops at West Holmes, Carrollton, and New Philadelphia. Since 1999, he has put four different programs in the Regional Tournament (West Holmes Girls, Carrollton Boys, New Philadelphia girls, and New Philadelphia boys) and two programs at the elite eight level (West Holmes Girls and New Philadelphia boys). His teams have captured (18) Sectional titles, (eight) District Championships, and (two) Elite Eights in 22 years of coaching in the East District.

During that time span, he amassed a record of 357-172 for a 68% winning percentage and a 56-20 tournament record of 74% winning percentage.

He has posted an overall mark of 385-208.

Voll was named State Coach of the Year in 2015 and was selected to Coach in the 2012 OHSBCA North-South Boys DI-II All Star Game with Indian Creek’s legendary coach, Joe Dunlevy.
