Volleyball: Camden-Frontier takes down Waldron, Terrier Abby Bills breaks Terrier record

HILLSDALE COUNTY — In this edition of the weekly volleyball roundup, Waldron tries to continue their momentum and get a season-defining win over Camden-Frontier. Litchfield attempts to fend off the North Adams-Jerome Rams and take son Pansophia on Wednesday. Jonesville heads to Springport looking to bounce back from a Big 8 loss to Bronson. Reading looked to take down Bronson in a road battle for a Big 8 match win. Hillsdale faces Ida as a part of the Ida-Hillsdale sports week.

Hillsdale vs. Ida

It was a tough four set loss for the Hornets in their matchup against Ida. Hornet head coach Cassandra Farmer noted that the Hornets played really well together and that the team has seen significant improvement in skill and mentality. The Hornets played scrappy and only fell by a few points in each set loss. The Hornet defense was one of the main highlights for the match, led by senior libero Shae Arnold who led the team with 20 digs.

Offensively, Junior Karsyn Stebbins (OH) led with 12 kills, assisted by senior Megan Rufenacht (S/RH) and junior Jael Miller (MH) who offered 5 kills apiece. Senior setter Addison Hoffman led with 12 assists with Megan Rufenacht also contributing 11 assists.

The Hornets travel to Grass Lake this Saturday with match times starting at 10 a.m.

Reading vs. Bronson

The Bronson Vikings improved to 3-0 in the Big 8 title race with a three game sweep of Reading by final scores of 25-19, 25-16 and 25-13. The Rangers and head coach Melissa Warfield look to regroup for a Tuesday, Sept. 27 battle with Jonesville on the road. Both the Comets and Rangers are looking to find momentum as they look to stay in the mix for the conference race. (Stats will be updated in the online edition of this story when available)

Jonesville vs. Springport

Jonesville worked together to sweep the Springport Spartans for a big road win after the Comets fell to Bronson in their previous Big 8 contest. The Comets won the sets by scores of 25-14, 25-14 and 25-15.

Lyra Nichols led the team with five aces, five kills, and 11 assists. Alaina Barrett had three aces and eight assists. Gracen Hager had two aces. Alexis Ewing had two aces and nine digs. Haley Mach had two aces and 10 digs. Brooke Owen had four kills. Brooke Sharp had four kills. Natalynn Beach had four kills.

Jonesville looks to defend its home court against the Rangers next Tuesday night.

Litchfield vs. North Adams-Jerome

Litchfield and North Adams-Jerome battled on the Terrier home court on Tuesday night in a matchup between two rival schools. The Rams were able to defeat the Terriers in four sets. The Terriers took set one 25-17. Set two was won by the Rams 28-26 in a thrilling finish. Terrier Becky McCafferty helped the Terriers overcome a slow start in the set and the Terriers and Rams were near deadlock at 25-24. The Terriers tied it up 26-26 before falling in what would prove to be the turning point in the match.

Set three saw the Rams put together another impressive start before Terrier Eliza Alvarez helped lead the Litchfield volleyball team back to tie the set at 12-12. Alvarez had three aces in the set. North Adams-Jerome faced a 18-15 deficit and then tied it at 19-19. The Terriers took the lead again 21-19 but failed to hold back the Rams from winning 25-21.

The Terriers faced fatigue heading into the fourth set. Coach Katie Chapman tried to help her Terriers with timeouts throughout the set but the Rams continued to add to their lead. Eliza Alvarez had another strong set for the terriers with more aces. The Terriers grabbed a 14-13 lead but the Rams hammered back to take a 20-14 lead that would finish the final set's lead changes. The final score: 25-19 in favor of the Rams.

For the Terriers, Tavia Shelton had one ace, six kills, five assists and two digs. Addi McLouth had one ace, four kills and eight digs. Abby Bills had one ace, two kills, nine assists and eight digs. Becky McCafferty had two aces, four kills and three digs. Eliza Alvarez had four aces, one kill, one assist and three digs. Jenna Miller had four kills and eight total blocks (six solo). Tavia Shelton had seven total blocks including four solo. Abby Bills had a solo block.

For North Adams, Maddie Iveson had nine aces and was 18 for 20 from the serve line and added seven kills. Miranda Daniels also had seven kills. Freshman Aleecia Baker had 21 assists.

North Adams-Jerome will head into a Tuesday night rematch with Hillsdale Academy. Litchfield heads to Tekonsha for a rivalry match and an SCAA showdown.

Litchfield vs Pansophia

The Terriers were able to follow-up their Tuesday night loss with a three-set victory over Pansophia. The team had a total of 40 aces over the course of the three sets. The final scores were 25-7, 25-13 and 25-4.

Tavia Shelton had 13 aces, three kills, six assists and one block. Addi McLouth had four aces and two kills. Jenna Miller had three blocks and four kills. Abby Bills had 18 aces, one kill, two assists and one dig. Becky McCafferty had one ace and one kill. Eliza Alvarez had four aces.

Abby Bills set a new school record for aces in a match.

Camden-Frontier vs. Waldron

Waldron head coach Katina Fellabaum and Camden-Frontier head coach Kimberly Alley have their teams poised to fight for SCAA division and SCAA conference trophies this season. Waldron has won several of their recent matches and hoped to carry that momentum into their home matchup with Camden-Frontier, who has also won several of their recent matchups including a big statement win over Hillsdale Academy.

Camden-Frontier and Waldron battled through four sets, with C-F coming away with the victory. Waldron was able to take a lead over Camden-Frontier in each of the first three sets but the C-F varsity volleyball team was able to come back and win games two and three before winning the final set.

The Spartans missed on a crucial serve on game-point in set two. The missed serve allowed Camden-Frontier to win the set. "Camden-Frontier has a couple of really good hitters, so we needed to close the block and tonight that did not happen," said Spartan coach Katina Fellabaum.

"I am proud of how hard my girls played and pushed to the last point."

For Waldron, Jena Fellabaum had seven kills, three aces, two blocks and 11 assists. Hannah Hubinger added five kills, five aces, four blocks and 10 digs. Emma Wines finished with six kills, two blocks, one ace and 18 digs.

For Camden-Frontier, Kendall Alley had 15 assists and six aces. Jaden Clark had 14 digs, 12 kills and five aces. Rylee Mckitterick had 21 serve-receives, 32 digs and two aces. Lexus Sigler had five kills. Elsi Fenstermaker had nine assists. Maddi Swan had 22 digs, 14 kills and two aces.

Camden-Frontier is now 7-4-6 this season and has an SCAA matchup with Battle Creek St. Phillip this Thursday at 6 p.m. The home match will be one of the biggest matches of the season for Camden-frontier.
