Volleyball, cross country and more: FHSAA releases 2022 Northeast Florida fall sports districts

The new school year is already taking shape.

The Florida High School Athletic Association released preliminary fall sports classifications Wednesday for sports other than football for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years.

The FHSAA released the new lists for bowling, cross country, golf, swimming and girls indoor volleyball.

The association is reverting to a standard two-year cycle, after a single-year cycle in 2021-22 due to planning complications stemming from the coronavirus pandemic.

Also notable: Fall sports like volleyball will follow the FHSAA's traditional classification format based on student enrollment, unlike the modified metro-suburban split that will govern high school football this fall. Under the 2022 football system, the eight most densely-populated counties (Duval, Seminole, Orange, Hillsborough, Pinellas, Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade) are grouped into one of four Metro divisions, with all other teams in the Suburban category.

For Jacksonville, many districts are fairly similar to their 2021 counterparts, such as the strong volleyball District 3-6A that continues to group Fleming Island, Fletcher and Ponte Vedra.

The classifications below are not necessarily final. Schools may appeal their assignments to the FHSAA through Friday, May 27.
