Volleyball roundup: BOLD adjusts well, beats Melrose

Sep. 21—OLIVIA — The BOLD volleyball team has been a team of adjustment this fall.

Players have been moved into different roles in hopes of improving from last season's 22-5 record.

And on Tuesday night, some mid-match adjustments kept BOLD in the win column. After a pair of tight sets to start the West Central Conference match against Melrose, the Warriors finished things out in four sets, 27-25, 17-25, 25-9, 25-16.

"It's been a lot of fun (this season)," said BOLD head coach Baylie Kubesh. "We've had some girls step into different roles and seeing them be able to take that on and thrive in it is huge. We've had our ups and downs, but they've battled through that adversity well.

"We know our weaknesses, we know our strengths, and we try to tailor to our strengths and work on our weaknesses."

One weakness early on Tuesday, according to Kubesh, was with ball control. But the Warriors settled in during sets three and four and took command of the match. Delaney Tersteeg and Mari Ryberg had 14 and 13 digs, respectively. Setter Layla Pfarr finished with 30 set assists.

"(Ball control) was something we struggled with in the first two games," Kubesh said. "To be able to deliver our passes where our setter wasn't having to chase them constantly, the girls were able to get better swings on the ball and see their shots better."

Benefitting the most from the improved passing on offense was Ryberg. The senior outside hitter had a team-high 21 kills.

"She's struggled with her line shots lately, so we told her to take the focus off her line shots and take more cross-court shots and work into that," Kubesh said of Ryberg. "She allowed herself to have those shots, which led to those line shots. She had more room to work with."

BOLD also adjusted at the net defensively and picked up big block numbers. Kenzie Visser, a 5-foot-11 junior, had seven blocks. Ryberg, also standing at 5-11, added four blocks.

"We did a better job of understanding that their setter slowed down the pace of the game," Kubesh said. "Knowing she was giving us that half-second before going up made a difference. Some of their girls had a longer swing, so that was going slower, too. Adjusting to that made a difference in games three and four."

Now 6-1 in the West Central, BOLD plays host to Morris/Chokio-Alberta on Thursday.
