Volleyball: Three Section 9 champs advance to regional finals

Section 9 class champions Valley Central, John S. Burke Catholic and Mount Academy have all won and advanced to the regional finals of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association girls volleyball tournament. A win over the weekend will send these schools to the Final Four in Glens Falls.

Pine Bush and Spackenkill both bowed in the sub-regional round.

Class AA

Pine Bush fell in three sets to Section 4's Corning, which will take on Section 1 champion Mamaroneck at 4 p.m. Friday at John Jay-Cross River High School.

Class A

Visiting Cornwall advanced to the regional finals with a 25-14, 24-26, 27-25, 25-3 win over Section 4's Vestal. The Dragons will play Section 1 champ Lakeland at 1:30 p.m. Friday at John Jay-Cross River High School.

"It was a great match,'' said Cornwall coach Jeff Moulton. "Vestal's defense was great.''

For Cornwall, Zakara Masibo posted 16 kills and four blocks; Karina Liba had 10 kills and 10 digs; Alex Hinchcliff had eight kills and 12 digs; Julia Santafemia had 29 digs; and, Kristina Garcia had 10 digs and 15 assists.

Class B

Spackenkill fell to Section 4's Maine-Endwell 25-21, ?-25, 28-26, 21-25, 15-12. M-E will take on Section 1 champion Hendrick Hudson at 11 a.m. Friday at John Jay-Cross River High School.

Class C

On Tuesday, Burke Catholic beat Blind Brook, 26-24, 25-21, 10-25, 25-19, held at Bard College. The Eagles will face the Long Island champ at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at James I. O'Neill High School.

For Burke, Onoria Demarest posted 39 assists; Eva Fitzpatrick had 24 kills and four digs; Jaime Hernandez had eight digs and seven assists; and, Megan Gurda had four kills.

"It sure was a fight,'' said Burke coach Sandra Fuentes.

For Blind Brook (18-4), Oriah Rosenfeld had 19 kills and 13 digs; Fernanda Julian posted 29 assists and 12 digs; and, Halle Greiage had 11 kills and nine digs.

Class D

Mount Academy advanced to regional finals with a 25-4, 25-7, 25-8 win over Section 11's Shelter Island, 25-4, 25-7, 25-8, held at Bard College. The Eagles will take on Tioga at 4 p.m. Saturday at Owego High School.

For the Mount, Jacqui Maendel posted 26 assists and eight aces; Ruby Moody had 13 kills, Amy Boller added six and Jenna Maendel had seven to go with three aces.
