Volleyball: Tibbets, Hatcher spark Abilene Cooper past San Angelo Central

Mattie Tibbets had 11 kills and 12 blocks to lead Cooper past San Angelo Central 25-21, 14-25, 25-19, 25-21, 15-7 in a non-district volleyball match Tuesday at Cougar Gym.

“She totally changed their offense,” Cooper coach Nora Campbell said about Tibbets’ play at the net.

Cooper took down Class 6A Central (17-8), despite playing without two starters – middle hitter Abigail Pena-Perez (ankle sprain) and outside hitter Skyla Stark (illness).

Campbell brought up Maeley Siglock from the JV, and she had six digs and two kills despite no practice with the varsity.

“The kids rallied around her and each other,” Campbell said. “They did awesome. They played with a lot of heart tonight. Our middle school kids were there, so there a lot of energy in the room. They really helped us.”

Jazlyn Hatcher added eight kills and an eye-popping 36 digs for the Lady Cougars (10-13).

“She did awesome,” Campbell said. “She did great defensively. We haven’t been using her on the front row much, but we had to have her tonight, and she did awesome there, too.”

Karrigan Parrott had 24 assists, five kills and 11 digs.

“They turned a corner this weekend,” Campbell said. “They’re getting better now.”

Cooper plays Midland High next Tuesday in Midland before opening District 4-5A play at Lubbock-Cooper on Sept. 9.
