Volunteer 'Litter Leaders' needed for 4th annual Upper Delaware Litter Sweep

Designated leaders to help organize volunteers to clean up litter on land along the Upper Delaware Scenic & Recreational River are being sought for the 4th Annual Upper Delaware Litter Sweep from April 20 to 28.

The Upper Delaware Council (UDC) is looking for "Litter Leaders" in each Pennsylvania township bordering the Upper Delaware in Wayne and Pike counties and in each New York town in Delaware, Sullivan and Orange counties.

UDC, a non-profit organization, sponsors this activity celebrating Earth Day, which occurs during the week when crews are collecting litter.

The UDC states that Litter Leaders are responsible for setting the date(s) and location(s) for their cleanups, helping round up volunteers with the UDC’s publicity outreach and overseeing safety standards with provided instructions.

Volunteers receive a commemorative Upper Delaware Litter Sweep T-shirt with a new design for the 2024 Little Sweep; supplies including bags, pickers and safety equipment; and information on how to dispose of the trash they collect.

Upper Delaware Council 2024 Chairperson Virginia Dudko (Town of Deerpark representative) has volunteered at every Upper Delaware Litter Sweep, including a 2022 cleanup along the New York State Route 97 Upper Delaware Scenic Byway near the Mongaup Access.

Litter Leaders are needed in the following riverfront municipalities: Buckingham, Manchester, Damascus, Berlin, Lackawaxen, Shohola and Westfall townships (Pennsylvania) and the towns of Hancock, Fremont, Delaware, Cochecton, Tusten, Highland, Lumberland and Deerpark (New York).

Individuals, groups, or businesses willing to volunteer are asked to contact Stephanie Driscoll at 845-252-3022 or stephanie@upperdelawarecouncil.org with their name, email address, phone number and where they would like to clean up. Goods and services are also welcome.

According to the UDC, donations from partners, businesses and "those who love the river corridor" are what pay for this event.

Donations by credit cards may be made via a "Donate Now" button on the UDC website. Checks can be mailed to Upper Delaware Council, P.O. Box 192, Narrowsburg, NY 12764; or monetary donations can be dropped off at the 211 Bridge St., Narrowsburg, office. Indicate that the donation is for the 2024 Litter Sweep.

Contributors of $50 and above will be acknowledged in event publicity.
