Volunteer Opportunities Of The Week: 2020 Census Helpers

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Each week, Patch will be highlighting a volunteer opportunity — or more — in the Hudson Valley. This will be a chance to help your community and be an opportunity to give back — perhaps in a way you didn't consider before.

And if you are in an organization that has some need for volunteers, be sure to let us know by emailing michael.woyton@patch.com.

This week we are putting the spotlight on a few opportunities in the Hudson Valley.

As a reminder, in response to the ongoing new coronavirus crisis, Volunteer New York! set up a website so people can find opportunities to help in their communities. The Virtual Volunteer Center will act as a regional hub that lists community needs and volunteer opportunities that support the most vulnerable who are affected by the virus.

According to organizers, Volunteer New York! has been working closely with local agencies and county and state officials to ensure a coordinated response in directing those who want to help where their time and resources can do the most good.

There are many opportunities from which to chose, and organizers said people should check back often because it's a constantly changing public resource.

Here are a few opportunities as suggested by Volunteer New York!:

Virtual/Remote:
Adolescent & Teen Jump Start Program Tutors
D.A.F.T. Youth Services
Virtual

On-site:
2020 Census Helpers
Westchester Library System
Throughout Southern Westchester

Driving:
Drivers With Small Trucks Needed
Open Door Family Medical Center
Elmsford

Also, volunteers are needed at Fantastic Finds, an upscale resale shop located at 400 King Street in Chappaqua. The store, which boasts a wide inventory of new and gently used items in pristine condition, is staffed by volunteers. Proceeds from sales benefit Support Connection, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization based in Yorktown Heights that provides free, year-round counseling and other support services to people impacted by breast and ovarian cancer.

Volunteering at Fantastic Finds is a great opportunity for anyone age 18 and older who likes people or enjoys retail. No experience necessary, training provided. Volunteers greet customers, accept donated items for sale, organize merchandise, etc. Volunteers generally work in shifts of about 3.5 hrs., from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., or 1 p.m. to 4:30 pm Monday through Saturday.
