United Way of Henderson County and sponsor Pardee UNC Health Care will partner with Henderson County Public Schools to host Day of Action on Friday, Aug.19.

Day of Action is a county-wide morning of service to help local schools get ready for the upcoming school year, according to a news release from the United Way. Up to 600 volunteers are needed to work on 31 service projects at 24 schools and learning centers. Projects will include painting, cleaning playgrounds, mulching and a variety of tasks to help schools prepare for the start of the academic year. In addition to serving at local schools, volunteers are asked to donate school supplies for Henderson County students in need.

“Day of Action is back. We are thrilled to once again provide an in-person volunteer opportunity for our community to show its support for our incredible school teachers and the children they serve,” said Denise Cumbee Long, Executive Director of United Way of Henderson County. “We are grateful to partner once again with Pardee and Henderson County Public Schools, and we need hundreds of volunteers to come out and roll up their sleeves. Retirees, working professionals, families and kids, are all welcome.”

Interested volunteers can find registration and the service projects online by visiting United Way’s website at www.liveunitedhc.org/dayofaction. Volunteers who are registered online by July 22 are guaranteed a free T-shirt.

Volunteers and community members are invited to review a list of essential school supplies posted on the website. These supplies for students in need will be shared with all county schools. Everyone is encouraged to review the list and shop for supplies. Donated items may be brought to the school where you're volunteering, or to Hendersonville Middle School (825 N. Whitted St., Hendersonville) on Aug.19 between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m.

“Day of Action is the perfect kickoff event for the upcoming school year,” said John Bryant, outgoing Superintendent of Henderson County Public Schools. “Service projects across our school system help to beautify our campuses, brighten our school buildings, and energize our school environments in preparation for the return of our students and staff. We are so very grateful to the hundreds of volunteers who help to make this event a county-wide success.”
