The Association for the Welfare of Animals is holding its annual Dog House Derby to benefit local canines.

Volunteers are needed to help build 24 doghouses on Saturday, Nov. 11.

"This will be AWA's sixth year of building doghouses in Cleveland County through our connection with Animal Services," wrote B.J. Zamora with AWA. "Our board originally wanted a means of engaging young people in the protection and sheltering of dogs in our county and decided to have a one day build of previously cut out wooden parts for large, safe and warm dog houses."

Work will begin at CCAS office located at 1601 Airport Road in Shelby at 9 a.m. and will continue until finished.

The houses are then distributed to families who need shelter for outdoor dogs.

“If you like to help dogs have safe homes, use tools, or just have a good time, please join AWA on Saturday, Nov. 11,” wrote Zamora.

She said the association has worked with area high school CTE students under their teachers' supervision to cut out the houses from single sheets of plywood in their carpentry classes.

"This year both Crest High School and Kings Mountain High School students have prepared the houses for assembly on Nov. 11," Zamora said. "Their effort also allows students to earn service hours needed for graduation."

Students are welcome to volunteer on Saturday and assist with building, painting and roofing of the houses.

Each doghouse will be given to families with a bale of straw donated by Wilson Brothers’ Farms of Shelby and bricks for placing the shelters were donated by Spake Concrete Products.

Zamora said this year, the association welcomes supporters to donate $50 for the right to name a doghouse in honor or memory of their favorite pet. Donations can be brought to Animal Services on Nov. 11 and people can pick out a doghouse to name.

She said donations help pay for materials to complete the builds.

Donations can also be mailed to AWA, P.O. Box 564, Shelby, NC 28151.

A rain date if the weather is rainy is scheduled for Nov. 18.
