Volunteers working to fill 1 million boxes with food to distribute to Pittsburgh families

Local churches across the area were packing food into boxes on Sunday, hoping to fill and distribute 1 million of them by the end of November.

One church involved in the effort was the Macedonia Church of Pittsburgh.

“It’s part of being a Christian, doing God’s work and his will. We’re preparing meals, making sure meals were made with love,” said Ja’neen Jones, a member of the church.

The volunteers’ goal is part of a mission to provide the Pittsburgh Greater Foodbank with 1 million boxes of food which will then be distributed to families throughout the area.

The drive is called “Amen to Action.”

Lee Kricher, president of the Pittsburgh Leadership Foundation, said the idea to bring 1 million meals to Pittsburgh with Amen to Action throughout the month of November began in 2017.

“The energy is amazing and we call it Amen to Action because it’s one thing for people to pray for our city, but to turn that into action and try to make a difference, that’s what you’re feeling,” said Kricher.

The chairman of Amen to Action, John Henne, said so many people have been wanting to donate their time they have actually had to turn volunteers away.

“People are coming from all different backgrounds, all different churches, to serve those in our community,” said Henne.

During times of inflation and other struggles, Kricher says the number of volunteers and support means the world.

“Story after story of people who are at the period of time or season of life where this makes a huge difference,” said Kricher.

The boxes are expected to be fully packed by the end of next week.
