Volusia County Amateur: Derek Sanderson shoots pair of 71s for 6-shot win at Spruce Creek
PORT ORANGE — Derek Sanderson took a break from an unexpected college visitation process to win the 2022 Volusia County Amateur Championship at Spruce Creek Country Club
The former New Smyrna Beach High golfer practically lapped the field in the 25-man Championship Flight. His Saturday-Sunday rounds of 71-71, for a 2-under 142, was six shots better than Cannon Tarnow (74-74) and Tyler Reese (73-75), who tied for second at 4 over.
Sanderson spent much of the previous two weeks battling illness, including high fever, and while weakened a bit from tee to green, he made up for it once there — “putting was the difference this weekend,” he said.
He counted roughly a dozen putts in the 6-foot range over his 36 holes, and he made all but one of them.
“I did really well with my scrambling and putting,” said Sanderson, who completed his freshman season at Florida Tech this past year before the Brevard County school dropped golf and several other sports.
He’s now visiting a handful of schools and deciding from his list of offers.
Rob Bringardner won the Senior Flight (ages 50-64). After a first-day 67, he shot 75 Sunday to also finish at 2 under with a six-shot margin of victory over Dave Muldowney.
Jeff Hall shot 79-74 to win the Super Senior Flight (65 and up) by four shots over Mike Arnold. David Moskovits and Jim Stone tied for third, another shot back.
