Volusia County Schools' Spruce Creek High School closed Friday due to power outage

Spruce Creek High School will be closed again Friday due to a power outage impacting the entire campus.

A transformer blew, causing equipment failure, according to Principal Todd Sparger's message to families. The earliest temporary fix date is Friday evening.

Families were first notified early Thursday morning about Thursday's closure, according to Danielle Johnson, Volusia's director of Community Information.

Later Thursday afternoon, Sparger informed families of Friday's closure. He said that athletic events on Thursday and Friday at other campus will still take place and that instructional time will be absorbed into the school's schedule. Testing originally scheduled for Thursday will be rescheduled, according to Johnson.

Monday is a student holiday and a teacher work day. Teachers will be able to return to campus Monday and students will follow suit Tuesday, according to Sparger. Generators will be onsite to assist, and the air conditioning has not been impacted.

"Thank you to our operations team and FPL for their hard work in identifying and working on this issue today and their timely attendance to this matter," Sparger said in his communication to families. "Thank you, families, for your understanding, and we look forward to seeing you on Tuesday."
