Volusia County Schools, teachers union settle contract

Volusia County Schools and Volusia United Educators Instructional settled their contract Friday after three bargaining sessions.

“I appreciate the hard work of both teams and the desire to acknowledge the hard work of our instructional personnel,” said Volusia United Educators president Elizabeth Albert in a statement.

The contract agreement includes an approximately $5.9 million total increase to the compensation package; a 2% increase to the supplements; a retention bonus increase and removal of a 30-year cap; a maintained longevity bonus; and agreement to the Teacher Salary Increase Allocation distribution plan, according to a Volusia County Schools press release.

The next step includes ratifying the deal, which is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 7. Then the agreement would go before the school board on Sept. 12.

“I am thrilled that the teams were able to work together to reach an agreement that will benefit our instructional staff,” said superintendent Carmen Balgobin in a statement. “The impact our teachers make daily is greatly appreciated."
