Volusia County Schools votes to replace Edith I. Starke Elementary School in DeLand

The Volusia County School Board Tuesday approved building a brand-new Edith I. Starke Elementary School in DeLand.

The current building is being replaced due to its age, according to Danielle Johnson, Volusia's director of community information. The project will require some rezoning.

Construction is expected to begin in March 2024, and the school plans to open its doors in August 2025. The new school will be built on the north end of the campus while the original building remains in operation, Johnson said.

The new Stark I. Elementary will have 650 student stations and is expected to exceed $35 million, according to the board's meeting agenda. Johnson said the project's construction manager will submit a guaranteed maximum price to the district for approval in January.
