Volusia County shootout ends with suspect dead, two Daytona Beach officers wounded

A 44-year-old man was killed Saturday and two Daytona Beach police officers were injured during a shootout at an apartment complex in Holly Hill.

The officers arrived to the 1600 block Espanola Avenue with a Holly Hill police officer to investigate a tip about an attempted murder suspect, according to Daytona Beach Police Chief Craig Capri.

Body camera footage released Sunday show officers went inside an apartment and approached a bedroom when a man — later identified by authorities as Michael A. Harris — opened fire and hit a Daytona Beach police officer in the chest. Capri said a round struck the officer’s ballistic vest.

Multiple gunshots are heard in the footage. The wounded officer fires off rounds from where he fell in the kitchen toward the bedroom as another officer yells, “Put the gun down.”
