Volusia County teacher, football coach arrested for inappropriate relationship with student

Volusia County authorities arrested a high school football coach for having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

On Monday, Volusia County schools issued a statement regarding the arrest of Atlantic High School teacher and football coach Arin Hankerd. The statement mentioned Hankerd’s arrest for his “inappropriate conduct” with a student and said, “this type of behavior will not be tolerated.”

Officials from the county’s Office of Professional Standards met with Hankerd in Volusia County Jail, where he tendered his resignation. Hankerd worked at the high school for nearly two years.

On Feb. 10, someone reported that he had an “ongoing sexual relationship” with a 15-year-old student, according to a press release from the Port Orange Police Department.

Over the weekend, detectives from the Special Investigations Unit discovered the relationship started in January.

On Sunday, they arrested Hankerd and executed a search warrant at his home, according to the press release.

Authorities are holding him in Volusia County Jail with a bond of $115,000 for several charges.

Those charges include two counts of molestation on someone older than 12 but younger than 16, traveling to meet a minor, lewd behavior with a minor and other charges.
