Volusia-Flagler-St. Johns High School Athlete of the Week poll: Oct. 31

The polls are open!

It's time to vote for the Volusia-Flagler-St. Johns Athlete of the Week for the week of Oct. 24-29. Athletes for bowling, cross county, golf, swimming and volleyball are eligible throughout the fall; The News-Journal and Record will hand out game balls each week for the top performers in football.

Last week, Ponte Vedra volleyball player Jessica Shattles took home the honor, claiming 25% of the votes.

The News-Journal and Record gather nominees from scores and stats emailed to the sports desk during the week by coaches across the area. Coaches can email nominees to sports@news-jrnl.com.

Voting begins each Monday and closes at 10 a.m. Thursday. Votes are restricted to once per device per hour.

Bowling

Morgan Naydich, Matanzas: Naydich was the district’s individual runner-up and clinched a district title for Matanzas with a clutch 10th frame.

Emma Pezzullo, Flagler Palm Coast: Pezzullo rolled a 694 series and won the individual girls' title at the district championships.

Tyler Sprague, DeLand: Sprague claimed district individual honors with an even 700 series at the district championships.

Cross Country

Andrew Gazzoli, Father Lopez: Gazzoli ran to a fifth-place finish (16:54) at the 1A Region 2 meet.

Alyson Johnson, Creekside: The freshman crossed the finish line in 18 minutes and 46 seconds, good for third at the 4A Region 1 meet.

Matt Ryan, Nease: Ryan was less than 1.5 seconds off the lead, taking second place with a time of 15:21 at the 4A Region 1 meet.

Golf

Amelia Cobb, Seabreeze: Cobb fired a 74 to win the individual championship and boost Seabreeze to the team title in 2A District 6.

Nancy Cox, Ponte Vedra: Cox won the 2A District 3 title by five strokes (70) as Ponte Vedra also placed first as a team.

Alexandra Gazzoli, Matanzas: Gazzoli shot a 71, winning the 2A District 4 crown by 5 strokes and leading Matanzas to also place first.

Swimming

Charlotte Driesse, Nease: Driesse won the 200-yard IM and 100-yard freestyle races at the 3A Region 1 meet. She also served as one-fourth of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team.

Alexander Kim, Tocoi Creek: Kim placed first in two individual events — the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly — while also competing on the first-place 200-yard medley relay team at the 2A District 3 meet.

Caleb Orchard, Seabreeze: The senior placed first in all four events he competed in — the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard medley relay — at the 2A District 4 meet.

Volleyball

Jalynn Brown, New Smyrna Beach: The senior led the Barracudas in kills in both of their regional tournament wins. Brown had 16 against Niceville and 23 against Ponte Vedra.

Cora Hamilton, DeLand: Hamilton recorded seven blocks in the Bulldogs’ 3-1 regional quarterfinals win over Timber Creek.

Zeta Washington, Ponte Vedra: Washington put up game-high kill totals in Ponte Vedra’s regional quarterfinals victory over Chiles (17) and semifinals loss to New Smyrna Beach (17).
