VoRide, a $2-per-trip ride sharing service, launches in Volusia County

People looking to get around DeLand have a new option, and it's cheaper than Uber.

This week, Volusia County launched VoRide, a ridesharing app that offers rides for just $2 per passenger at any time, according to a Volusia County news release.

"This pricing feature eliminates the worry of peak-time surcharges, making VoRide the budget-friendly choice for travel," according to the county.

Here's how it works.

VoRide is available from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays. The service isn't available on Sundays or holidays.

People can download the app via the App Store or Google Play.

Riders use the app to create an account, book trips and pay for them ― there's no tipping. They can also pay the driver in cash for the ride, but it needs to be exact change. The app will show them an estimated arrival time of the driver and track the driver's location. The VoRide vehicles all have the VoRide and county logos displayed.

"At this time, riders will not be able to preschedule their trips, so you can just book when you’re ready to go," according to Votran, the county's public transportation system.

People who can't use the app but need the service can book a trip by calling 386-210-9861.

Each driver is employed by Via, the county contractor operating the service. And each driver has gone through an "extensive background and driving record" review, according to the county.

People will be able to connect to Votran buses using the app in case they need to venture out of the DeLand service area.

"This ensures that passengers can continue their journey without extra charges in most instances, providing an extended reach beyond the region," according to the county.

People who use the app should expect the possibility of sharing the vehicle with other passengers.

"This approach keeps costs low for riders and promotes sustainable transportation," according to the county.

VoRide offers $1 rides for children 7 to 18, people with disabilities and seniors. People who need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle can request one through the VoRide app. There is no charge for children who are under 7 years old if they're with a paying guardian.

County officials expect to expand the VoRide service to DeBary, Deltona and Orange City in 2024.
