Auburn baseball player wins State Journal-Register high school athlete of the week

Auburn baseball player Luke Boesdorfer ran away with the State Journal Register's high school athlete of the week.

Boesdorfer earned 55 percent of the 18,319 votes, beating out Beardstown baseball player Jacob Pate (35 percent). Full results are below.

Boesdorfer, a senior hurler, not only threw a complete game but also walloped a game-tying line drive to center field in the sixth inning en route to a 5-2 victory over host North Mac in the Class 2A regional semifinals last Thursday. He struck out just two but allowed only four hits, two walks and two earned runs.

Last week's winner was Nokomis softball player Reaghan Jonas, who earned 66 percent of the 9,531 votes, beating out North Mac baseball player Logan Hammann (18 percent) and Lincoln girls track and field athlete Reese McCuan (15 percent).

Ava Hancock, Sacred Heart-Griffin girls soccer

The Cyclones, deadlocked in a scoreless tie, restarted their Class 1A Quincy Notre Dame sectional semifinal against Alton Marquette in overtime at Illinois College’s England Stadium on Wednesday and Hancock delivered the game-winning goal for a 1-0 double-overtime victory. She rebounded Hannah Lambert’s shot for the win with under two minutes left in the second OT.

Becca Heitzig, Lincoln girls track and field

The sophomore not only won first place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:09.99 but also set the Class 2A state record at O'Brien Stadium on Saturday. Heitzig also anchored the second-place 4x400 relay at 3:58.96 with a group that also included Reese McCuan, Mallory Short and Alyssa Company.

Austin Henschen, Pana boys track and field

The senior qualified for the Class 1A state finals in four events and his mark of 22 feet, 8 3/4 inches in the long jump at Wednesday's Tuscola Sectional meet ranks second in the state behind only Cowden-Herrick’s Jadon Robertson.

Katelyn Lehnen, Chatham Glenwood girls track and field

The freshman phenom bolted to first place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.75 seconds at the Class 3A girls state track and field meet at O'Brien Stadium on Saturday. Lehnen also claimed third place in the 100 (12.23) and 400 (56.43).

Jacob Pate, Beardstown baseball

The senior hero crushed a walk-off grand slam in the seventh inning to give Beardstown a 6-4 win over Pleasant Plains in the Class 2A Quincy Notre Dame Regional semifinals on Wednesday. He finished with three hits, five RBIs and two runs. He also tossed a complete game with eight strikeouts while giving up five hits, four walks and four runs.

Zach Powell, Pleasant Plains boys track and field

The junior qualified for the Class 1A state finals in four events and set the best time statewide in the 400 (50.09 seconds) at the Maroa-Forsyth Sectional meet on Wednesday. He also met the state threshold in the high jump as well as the 4x400 and 4x800 relays.
