Nokomis softball player wins State Journal-Register high school athlete of the week

Nokomis softball player Reaghan Jonas ran away with the State Journal Register's athlete of the week.

Jonas earned 66 percent of the 9,531 votes, beating out North Mac baseball player Logan Hammann (18 percent) and Lincoln girls track and field athlete Reese McCuan (15 percent). Full results are below.

Jonas, a sophomore starting pitcher, parked a two-run home run over the left field fence in the top of the sixth inning and Nokomis recorded a 4-2 win over New Berlin on Tuesday. Jonas’ home run snapped a 2-2 tie and it was her second of the game. She had a solo homer in the second inning that gave Nokomis a 2-0 advantage. Jonas went the distance on the mound, striking out 11, walking five and allowing seven hits.

Last week's winner was Mount Pulaski baseball player Evan Cooper, who earned 51 percent of the 32,448 votes, beating out Gillespie softball player Emma Gipson (48 percent). The top two received 99 percent of all votes.

Qwinsuan Anderson, Chatham Glenwood boys track and field

The senior sprinter topped three events and the Chatham Glenwood won Central State Eight Conference meet title Thursday at Decatur Eisenhower's Alexander Field.  Anderson narrowly won the 100-meter dash in 11.05 seconds over Eisenhower’s Aaron Dabner (11.18). He then edged out Decatur MacArthur’s Sam Owens in the 200 with a time of 22.72. He also anchored the winning 4x100 in 43.32.

Cassidy Clark, Mount Pulaski girls track and field

The senior standout crushed the field in Thursday's Sullivan Sectional meet. She won the discus throw with a distance of 135 feet, 9 1/4 inches and will enter the state meet with the best throw of the season at 142-5 1/5, according to athletic.net.

Ella Gorrie, Chatham Glenwood girls soccer

The senior midfielder opened with two goals and Chatham Glenwood clinched the outright Central State Eight Conference title for a second consecutive season with an 8-0 victory over Rochester at the Glenwood Athletic Complex on Tuesday. She also added an assist.

Logan Hammann, North Mac baseball

The junior hit a three-run, inside-the-park home run for North Mac, en route to a 9-5 Sangamo Conference win over Pleasant Plains on Thursday. He also had a double.

Reese McCuan, Lincoln girls track and field

The senior set a school record in the triple jump (36-10 ½)  and easily claimed first place at Wednesday’s Dunlap Sectional. Her mark tied for second place in all of Class 2A, according to athletic.net. She also helped the 4x400 relay qualify for the state finals in 4:03.60.

Addison Wheatley, Auburn softball

The freshman blasted two home runs and drove in five runs to lead Auburn past Raymond Lincolnwood 9-3 in a nonconference softball game on Thursday. Wheatley’s first homer was a two-run shot in the top of the first inning. Her second long ball was a three-run homer that came in the sixth inning as Auburn plated three runs to close out the win.
