We have a winner in TODAY's Halloween Horror Showdown ... and, we're sorry to differ with you, but it's always been the winner.

We should know sir; this week, TODAY started with eight of the scariest films of all time and asked you to methodically hack through them — that is, vote on your favorites.

So polish your ax and break out your most maniacal Ed McMahon impression, because the winner is ...

"The Shining" (1980)

The terrible tale of little Danny, who is trapped in a snowbound hotel with his mother and slowly unraveling father, beat the original "Halloween" in TODAY's Halloween movie fright-fest.

And it was a close one; the Jack Nicholson classic got 53% of the vote, while Michael Myers and friends received 47%. "The Shining" also slashed its way past "The Exorcist" (1973) and "Friday the 13th" (1980) in the early rounds on its way to the title.

Thanks to everyone who voted and remember ... all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Happy Halloween!
