Below are the nominees for The Charlotte Observer high school athlete of the week.

This week’s nominees

Asher Allebach, Pine Lake Prep swimming: The Pride junior swam a school-record time of 1:53.20 to finish as 1A/2A state runner-up in the 200 individual medley at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary on Feb. 8.

Allebach also broke a school record to finish fourth at the state championship in 57.95 in the 100 breaststroke.

Allebach also swam the breaststroke leg for the Pine Lake 200 medley relay team that finished fourth at the state meet.

Nick Arnold, Lake Norman basketball: The 5-foot-11 sophomore scored 11 points, had nine rebounds, eight assists, one steal and one block in an 81-58 win over Hickory Ridge on Feb. 6.

Arnold also scored 15 points to go with six assists, three rebounds and three steals in an 88-66 win at Cox Mill on Feb. 9.

Arnold is averaging seven points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals per game for Lake Norman (21-1).

Tim Brown, Hough Indoor track: The Huskies’ senior won the 4A state indoor title in the 500-meter dash, running a time of 1:03.69 at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem on Feb. 9.

Brown also led the Hough 1,600-meter relay to a 4A state championship at the same meet.

Jacob Conroy, Porter Ridge basketball: The 5-10 junior scored 22 points and had five assists in a 66-49 win at Cuthbertson on Feb. 6.

Conroy is averaging nine points and three assists per game for Porter Ridge.

Jackson Fannon, East Lincoln basketball: The 6-7 junior scored 20 points, including the 1,000th point of his career, while grabbing nine rebounds in a 75-43 win at Fred T. Foard on Feb. 6.

Fannon also scored 18 points and had eight rebounds in a 69-53 victory at St. Stephens on Feb. 9.

Fannon is averaging 21.9 points and 7.5 rebounds for East Lincoln.

Alex Garmon, Hickory Ridge swimming: The Ragin’ Bulls’ senior became the first boys’ swimmer in school history to advance to the 4A state championship finals in both the 50 and 100 freestyle at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary on Feb. 9.

Garmon finished fifth at the state championship in the 50-freestyle (20.97) and eighth-place in the 100 freestyle (46.73).

Garmon is also the first Hickory Ridge boys’ swimmer to earn All-American consideration times in class 4A with a school record 20.78 and a school-record 46.23 in the 100 freestyle.

Jesus Jarquin, Monroe wrestling: The Redhawks’ junior won the 190-pound title at the 2A Midwest Regional at Mount Pleasant High on Feb. 10.

Jarquin is 37-0 overall this season.

Bryce Lofton, Independence indoor track: The Patriots’ junior ran a personal-best time of 6.42 to finish fourth in the 55-meter dash at 4A state indoor championships at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem on Feb. 9.

Lofton also ran a 6.45 in the 55-meter dash preliminaries at the same meet.

Peter Moye, South Mecklenburg basketball: The 6-3 senior scored 22 points, had four rebounds and five assists in a 60-52 win over Marvin Ridge on Feb. 6.

Moye also scored 21 points, had three rebounds and three assists in a 63-55 win over Ardrey Kell on Feb. 9.

Moye is averaging 20.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game for South Mecklenburg.

Hayden Schroeder, Lake Norman Charter diving: The Knights’ senior won his third consecutive NCHSAA 3A state diving title, breaking the state record score with 581.70 at the Triangle Aquatic Center on Feb. 9.

Schroeder’s efforts helped the Lake Norman Charter boys’ swimming team to a 3A state runner-up finish at the same meet.

Cameron Stinson, Mallard Creek wrestling: The Mavericks’ senior won the 126-pound title at the 4A West Regional at Mooresville to keep his perfect 60-0 record intact.

Stinson, a University of North Carolina commit, was also named the 4A West Regional’s most outstanding wrestler for his efforts.

Stinson, a three-time 4A state champion, is undefeated at 201-0, in his Mallard Creek High wrestling career.

Austin Swartz, Cannon School basketball: The 6-5 senior scored 35 points, had four rebounds, five assists and three steals in a 61-56 win at Providence Day on Feb. 6.

Swartz also scored 12 points, had eight assists and five rebounds as Cannon School won 81-59 at Charlotte Latin on Feb. 9.

Swartz, a Miami (FL) commit, is averaging 25.9 points, 5.8 assists and 5.3 rebounds for a Cannon School team (24-9) that also clinched their second straight CISAA conference title last week.
