Below are the nominees for The Charlotte Observer boys’ high school athlete of the week.

This week’s nominees

Nicholas Arado, Charlotte Country Day wrestling: The Buccaneers’ freshman went 3-0 at 138 pounds last week with technical pins against opponents from Wesleyan Christian on Jan. 8 and Sun Valley on Jan. 10, and he a decision over an opponent from Providence Day, also on Jan. 10.

Arado is 37-3 overall this season with wins over two reigning NCISAA state champions.

Chris Aristondo, South Mecklenburg swimming: The Sabres’ senior won the 200 individual medley (1:55.96) and the 100 backstroke (52.40) to lead the Sabres to a win over East Mecklenburg on Jan. 11.

Aristondo also led the 400 freestyle relay to victory at the same meet. He is an UNC Wilmington commit.

Isaiah Denis, Davidson Day basketball: The 6-foot-5 junior scored 30 points, had seven rebounds and five assists in a 73-48 win at Hickory Christian on Jan. 12.

Ben Gibbs, Metrolina Christian indoor track: The Warriors’ junior threw the shot put for a personal-best 45-3.25 to finish eighth overall at the Walter Bass High School Invitational at Liberty University on Jan. 13.

Gibbs made the finals in a field that included 89 throwers at Liberty.

Nick Hailey, Providence Day basketball: The 6-6 junior scored 28 points and had seven rebounds in a 67-47 win over Charlotte Christian on Jan. 12.

Hailey also scored 16 points and had seven rebounds in a 50-40 victory over Charlotte Latin on Jan. 10.

Hailey is averaging 11.7 points and 4.1 rebounds for Providence Day (16-5) through Monday.

Trey Hinson, Piedmont wrestling: The Panthers’ senior was a 7-0 last week at 126 pounds.

Hinson went 2-0 in a conference dual match Jan. 10, before going 5-0 to win the 126-pound title at Bob Mauldin Mat News’ Classic at Piedmont on Jan. 13.

Hinson is 40-5 overall through Monday.

Noah Lilly, Providence Day wrestling: The Chargers’ senior captain was a 7-0 last week at 144 pounds.

Lilly went 2-0 in dual match with Sun Valley Jan. 10, before going 5-0 to win the 144-pound title at the Kannapolis Duals at A.L. Brown High on Jan. 13.

Lilly, who has placed in every tournament this season, is 37-5 overall through Monday.

Landen Lyerly, Lincolnton basketball: The 6-6 junior scored 21 points, had 18 rebounds, six steals and two blocks in a 77-59 win at Bandys on Jan. 10.

Lyerly had another double-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks in a 79-65 victory over West Caldwell on Jan 12.

Lyerly is averaging 11 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks per game for Lincolnton (12-2) through Monday.

Matias Rampolla, Ardrey Kell indoor track: The Knights’ senior ran a personal-best time of 36.67 to win the 300-meter dash at the Providence High Polar Bear on Jan. 11.

Rampolla also won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.16 at the same meet.

Tyler Showalter, Butler basketball: The 6-6 senior scored 29 points to lead Butler to a 68-60 double overtime win over Charlotte Catholic on Jan. 10.

Showalter followed that up with 25 points and eight rebounds in a 67-54 win over Hunter Huss at the Phenom Hoops’ MLK Showcase at Carmel Christian on Jan. 13.

Butler is 9-6 overall through Monday.

Austin Swartz, Cannon School basketball: The 6-5 senior scored 35 points, grabbed eight rebounds and seven assists in a 73-63 win over Covenant Day on Jan. 10.

Swartz also scored 18 points, had seven assists and three rebounds in a 103-63 victory over Charlotte Country Day on Jan. 12.

Swartz, a Miami Hurricanes signee, finished off the week with 25 points, six rebounds and five assists in a 91-85 win over Julius Chambers in the Phenom Hoops’ MLK Showcase at Carmel Christian on Jan. 13.

Kam Taylor, Carmel Christian: The 6-6 senior scored 39 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a 78-64 win over Cox Mill Phenom Hoops’ MLK Showcase on Jan. 13.

Taylor also had 21 points, 10 rebounds, one steal and two blocks in a 60-51 victory at Pine Lake Prep on Jan. 10.
