Here are this week’s nominees for The Charlotte Observer boys high school athlete of the week.

This week’s Nominees

Brie Biddle, Cannon School Softball: The Cougars’ senior shortstop went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, two runs and a walk in 6-5 win at Charlotte Christian April 24.

Biddle went 2-for-2 with a double and two runs in a 10-4 loss to Charlotte Christian April 25.

Biddle capped the week by going 4-for-4 with a double, a triple, a RBI and four runs scored in a 13-6 victory at Covenant Day April 28.

Biddle is batting .635 with six home runs, six doubles, three triples and 24 RBI for Cannon School (13-6).

Nina Dominique, Charlotte Christian Track: The Knights’ sophomore won the 200-meter dash in 23.97 at Dick Williams’ Invitational at East Mecklenburg April 29. Her time was the fastest run by a NCISAA outdoor girls’ athlete this season.

Dominique also won the 100-meter dash at the same meet.

Betsy Eatmon, East Lincoln Softball: The Mustangs’ senior went 2-for-4 with a single, a home run and three RBI in a 7-2 win at Fred T. Foard April 25.

Eatmon also went 3-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI in a 12-2 victory over St. Stephen’s April 28.

Eatmon, a UNC Greensboro commit, is batting .569 with 11 home runs, seven doubles and 35 RBI for an East Lincoln team (15-1) that has won nine straight games.

Gabi Gama, Union Academy Softball: The Cardinals’ senior second baseman went 2-for-3 with a RBI and two walks in a 14-1 win at Central Academy April 24.

The next night, Gama went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a stolen base in an 11-1 victory at North Stanly April 25.

Gama also went 1-for-3 with two RBI in a 2-0 win over North Stanly April 28.

Gama is batting .368 with two home runs, four triples, six doubles and 15 RBI for Union Academy (18-3).

Aubrey Gilligan, Lake Norman Lacrosse: The Wildcats’ sophomore midfielder scored one goal, had two groundballs and three draw controls in a 20-4 win over Community School of Davidson April 24.

Gilligan has 10 goals, 18 groundballs and 71 draw controls for Lake Norman (15-3).

Gracie Hughes, Pine Lake Prep Soccer: The Pride junior midfielder accounted for all three goals with two scores and one assist in a 3-0 win over Community School of Davidson April 24.

Hughes also had a goal and an assist in an 8-0 victory over Bradford Prep April 26.

Hughes has eight goals and 11 assists for Pine Lake Prep (12-1-1).

Devin McElroy, Providence Day Soccer: The Chargers’ freshman forward scored a goal in a 2-0 win at rival Charlotte Latin April 25.

McElroy also had a goal in 4-1 victory over Charlotte Country Day April 27.

McElroy has 11 goals and nine assists for a Providence Day team (17-2) that has won 11 straight games through Sunday.

Anna McGowan, Marvin Ridge Softball: The Mavericks’ junior went 4-for-4 at the plate with two home runs, a triple, a single, five RBI, two runs scored and two intentional walks to lead Marvin Ridge to a 19-18 win over Piedmont April 25. McGowan also pitched four innings with three strikeouts in the same game.

McGowan went 2-for-3 with a home run, double, two RBI, two runs scored and one intentional walk in 7-6 victory over Weddington April 29.

Marvin Ridge (18-2) has won eight straight games this season.

Jaida McGrew, Mountain Island Charter Soccer: The Raptors’ sophomore scored two goals and had two assists in a 4-1 win over defending 1A state champion Christ the King April 24.

McGrew also had one goal in a 3-1 win over Lincoln Charter April 26.

McGrew has 29 goals and 12 assists for Mountain Island Charter (11-4).

Evie McMahan, Charlotte Latin Lacrosse: The Hawks’ junior attacker scored 12 goals and had five assists as Charlotte Latin went 3-0 last week.

McMahan helped Charlotte Latin to win at Charlotte Country Day (15-6 win, April 24), at Charlotte Christian (20-2 win, April 27) and over Durham Academy (21-11 win, April 28).

McMahan, a University of Virginia commit, has 89 goals and 34 assists for Charlotte Latin (14-5).

Kayley Newman, Ardrey Kell Soccer: The Knights’ senior defender scored on a free-kick from 30 yards out to help Providence to a 5-0 win over Providence April 26.

Newman also played a key role in Ardrey Kell’s shutout of Olympic (9-0, April 25) and Berry (9-0, April 28).

Newman has four goals and six assists for Ardrey Kell (16-3-1).

Newman was recognized as a scholarship recipient for the May Hood Hargett Breakfast Club for her efforts as a student athlete in the classroom, on the field and in the community.

Maddie Roland, Parkwood Softball: The Wolfpack senior went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double, a triple, four RBI and two runs scored in a 21-1 win at Monroe April 24.

Roland, a Bluefield State University commit (WV), is batting .417 with eight doubles, one home run and 20 RBI for Parkwood (12-8).

Charlotte Simas, Myers Park Soccer: The Mustangs’ senior score the game-winning goal on a penalty kick to lead Myers Park to a 2-1 win over South Mecklenburg March 25.

Myers Park (9-4-3) also won 9-0 at Olympic April 27.

Simas has 17 goals and three assists for Myers Park.

Grace Smith, South Point Soccer: The Red Raiders’ senior had three goals in a 7-2 win at Crest, March 25.

Smith added four more goals in a 9-0 win at Kings Mountain April 27.

Smith has 31 goals and 15 assists for a South Point team (14-0-3) that has won 11 straight games.

Barrett Williams, North Iredell Softball: The Raiders’ freshman went 4-for-5 at the plate with a double, two RBI and three runs scored to lead North Iredell to a 14-5 win at Hickory April 25.

Williams also had eight putouts at first base in the same game.

Williams is batting .333 with one home run, four doubles and 17 RBI for North Iredell (11-7).
