Below are the nominees for The Charlotte Observer girls’ high school athlete of the week.

This week’s nominees

Kiara Anderson, East Lincoln basketball: The 5-foot-4 sophomore point guard scored 29 points to go with 11 steals, eight assists and five rebounds in a 73-28 season-opening win over West Lincoln on Nov. 21.

Anderson averaged 11 points, four assists, four steals and three assists per game as a freshman last season.

Tyler Baughan, Community School of Davidson basketball: The 5-4 senior point guard scored 21 points and had nine steals to lead Community School of Davidson to a 67-36 win in the season opener at Lake Norman Charter on Nov. 21.

Baughan averaged six points and three rebounds per game as a junior last season.

Mary Bonner Dalton, Myers Park cross-country: The Mustangs’ senior ran a personal-best 16:53.80 to finish sixth overall in the Foot Locker Championships’ South Region at McAlpine Creek Park on Nov. 25. Her time was the fastest time run by a N.C. girl this season.

Dalton, a Notre Dame commit, became only the fourth girl to qualify for nationals twice in her high school career.

Dalton will compete in the Foot Locker National Championships in San Diego on Dec. 9.

Makailah Davis, South Mecklenburg basketball: The 5-7 junior scored 14 points in a 50-48 overtime win over Providence on Nov. 21.

Davis also had 26 points, five rebounds and five assists in a 54-38 loss to West Cabarrus in the Charlotte Hoops’ Challenge No. 24. She also had 24 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, eight steals in a 66-22 win over East Mecklenburg in the Leroy Holden Classic third-place game on Nov. 25

Davis is averaging 20 points and 3.4 rebounds per game for South Mecklenburg (1-1).

Madison Drayton, Cannon School basketball: The 5-11 freshman scored 24 points and had 17 rebounds in a 67-59 win over Watauga in the Charlotte Hoops’ Challenge at Harding High on Nov. 25.

Drayton is averaging 18.3 points and 10.3 rebounds for the Cougars (4-0).

Misa Garris, Garinger basketball: The 5-4 sophomore, named The Observer’s freshman of the year last season, scored 20 points, adding a career-high 14 steals, in a 60-25 win at Berry on Nov. 21.

Garris also scored 31 points, had 10 steals, four rebounds and four assists in a 65-55 win over Mooresville on Nov. 20.

Garris is averaging 24.3 points, 10 steals, 4.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game for a Garinger team that has started the season 3-0 for the first time in 17 years.

Delanie Hill, Providence basketball: The 5-7 senior scored 28 points to go with six rebounds and three steals, going 10-for-11 from the free-throw line, in a 50-48 overtime loss to South Mecklenburg on Nov. 21.

Hill, a University of Albany commit, is averaging 25 points and five rebounds per game for Providence (0-2).

Camille Montgomery, Rocky River basketball: The 5-11 junior scored 26 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, had four assists and three steals in a 54-53 loss at Cuthbertson on Nov. 20.

Montgomery averaged five points per game as a sophomore last year.

Chloe Moss, Independence basketball: The 5-10 senior scored 16 points and had 13 rebounds in a 65-36 win at Cuthbertson on Nov. 21.

Moss also had 13 points in a 76-70 victory over Mallard Creek in the Charlotte Hoops’ Challenge at Harding on Nov. 24.

Moss is averaging 14 points per game for Independence (3-0).

Lenise Joseph, North Mecklenburg basketball: The 6-foot freshman scored 31 points and had 12 rebounds in an 85-77 overtime win over Porter Ridge in the semifinals of the Leroy Holden Classic on Nov. 24.

The next day, Joseph added 16 points and eight rebounds in a win over Mooresville in the Holden Classic championship game.

Joseph was named the Holden Classic’s most valuable player (MVP) for her efforts.

North Mecklenburg is 2-0 this season.

Jah’nae Stevens, A.L. Brown basketball: The 5-10 junior scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Wonders to a 73-32 win at rival Concord on Nov. 21.

Stevens, who has played only one year of basketball, is averaging 17 points per game for A.L. Brown (2-0).

Ashanti Taylor, Porter Ridge basketball: The 5-10 freshman scored 30 points, had 14 rebounds and seven steals as Porter Ridge beat Union Academy 73-55 Nov. 21. It was Taylor’s first high school game.

She followed that up with 32 points, seven rebounds and five steals in an 85-77 overtime loss to host North Mecklenburg in the Leroy Holden Classic semifinal on Nov. 24.

Porter Ridge (2-1) also beat East Mecklenburg 66-22 in the Holden Classic third-place game on Nov. 25.
