Vote: Make your choice for Local Player of the Week for Jan. 10-15

Here are the top performers from the Abilene high schools vying to be the Reporter-News Local Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 15.

We continue to give you a vote in the Player of the Week selection process. The poll opens every Monday at 2 p.m. and stays open through Wednesday at 2 p.m. The winner will be announced Wednesday night and in Thursday's paper.

This year, the public vote will account for part of the selection process.

The six nominees for the Week of Jan. 10-15 are:

Mark Fakhoury, Wylie Boys Basketball

Fakhoury keeps stepping up for the Bulldogs and he did it again in Friday's District 4-5A opener against Lubbock-Cooper. He matched teammate Avery Brekke with a game-high 18 points, but he did most of his damage from the free throw line. He was 14 of 16 from the stripe, including 7 of 8 in the fourth quarter as Wylie won 53-44.

Jaelyn Rivera, Cooper Boys Basketball

Rivera was a dominant force offensively as the Cougars beat Lubbock High to open District 4-5A play. He scored a game-high 28 points, making 12 shots from the floor and going 4 of 5 from the free throw line. Cooper won 63-51.

Jeremiah Talib, Abilene High Boys Basketball

Talib was part of the Eagles sharpshooting in a 1-1 week against Midland High and San Angelo Central. He scored 17 points in the win against the Bulldogs and finished with 21 in the overtime loss at Central, making five 3-pointers in each game.

Kayla Dillon, Cooper Girls Soccer

Dillon scored a pair of goals in the 3-3 tie against Class 4A powerhouse Kennedale at the Castleberry Lady Lions girls soccer tournament. The second goal gave the Lady Coogs a 3-2 lead before the game was tied in the final minutes.

Avery Anders, Wylie Girls Soccer

In four games at the Joshua Lady Owls sHOOTout, Anders picked up a pair of shutouts. The first came in a scoreless tie against Granbury, where she made six saves, and then a 2-0 win against Azle in the finale. She was also solid in goal for the Lady Bulldogs in the 1-0 and 4-0 losses.

Shaliyah Christian-Stevenson, Abilene High Girls Basketball

Christian-Stevenson led the way for the Lady Eagles in their closest district game yet against Midland High. She scored 10 points, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers in the setback.
