The Athlete of the Week poll continues to be one of the highlights of my job.
Athletes are invested. Coaches are invested. Fans are invested.
We've seen it with the wrestling community, who have voted four grapplers as Athlete of the Week over the last month and a half. And we've seen it specifically with Fort Walton Beach High, which continues to vote in droves for all sports in earning seven of the 20 Athlete of the Week nods.
Even so, Baker, Choctaw, Crestview, Freeport, Niceville and South Walton have each been represented and every main sport has managed to make an appearance in the winner's circle for our lauded poll.
Since voting began in late August, we've witnessed four wrestlers, five cross country runners, three football stars, two swimmers, a volleyball standout, a golfer, two futballers and two basketball players snag top honors and with it a feature and All Sports Association T-Shirt.
All in all, the support has added up to more than 620,000 votes to lead all Florida Gannett properties.
Who will join Quinn Carper, Alex Davidson, Layne Franks, Sam Sherer, Zak Vosburgh, Spencer Mackenzie, Donovan Campbell, Will Jetton, Kemper Hodges, Ashton Nunes, Kayleb Wagner, Belicia O'Grady, Luke Larkin, Bailey Gable, Parker Nunley, Landon Campbell, Page Dolloff, Kaleb Hollins, Mariane Johnson and Sophia Edwards and this week?
The poll is up and running at nwfdailynews.com through noon Thursday. The winner (the same Athlete can't win AOTW twice in a season) will be awarded a one-of-a-kind NWF Daily News Athlete of the Week T-shirt sponsored by All Sports Association at their school and a weekend feature.
For future purposes, nominees are accepted via email or phone at firstname.lastname@example.org or 252-414-4239. Coaches, fans, parents and grandparents, athletes ... any and all submissions are welcomed.
