The votes are in! Who is this week's Alachua County high school Student of the Week?

The Gainesville Sun has started a high school Student of the Week feature that is similar to our Athlete of the Week feature in Sports. Alachua County high schools can nominate one student each week, and the community can vote.

Congratulations to our first winner, Summer Barnett from P.K. Yonge, who got 300 votes (54 percent.) According to the school's nomination form, Summer "boasts an impressive record of over 550 hours of community service. Not only is she an outstanding athlete who excels in basketball, she also shines academically. She represents the best of the Blue Wave student body!"

Nathan Collier from Gainesville High School was the runner-up.

Participating Alachua County high school principals, teachers and guidance counselors nominated students they say have shown outstanding academic and school achievement and community service. Nominations are due by noon Thursday.

A new poll posts every Monday (provided we have at least two nominees) and we announce a winner and runner-up on Friday.
