Vote for the Deer Park High School Defensive Player of the week

Here are the nominees for the first Deer Park Water high school football defensive player of the week in The Charlotte Observer’s coverage area.

Eligible players can come from Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln and Union Counties in North Carolina as well as York and Lancaster Counties in South Carolina.

Players were nominated by their coaches.

Readers can vote as often as they want until Friday when the winner will be announced. Deer Park will also present the weekly winners with a trophy.

This week’s defensive nominees

Nassor Ashenafi, Mallard Creek: Washington DC transfer had two interception returns for touchdowns in a 28-14 win over Independence.

Ryan Bassani, North Lincoln: in a 21-20 overtime loss to West Lincoln, Bassani, a junior linebacker, had 24 tackles, three tackles for a loss, a sack and he forced three fumbles.

Jake Davids, Ardrey Kell: played offense, defense and special teams in Friday’s 13-10 win over Providence. He had more than 150 all-purpose yards and scored the game-winning TD. He had two forced fumbles, including the one that sealed the game.

Harrison Johnson, Porter Ridge: in a 46-0 win over Rocky River, Johnson had 10 tackles, four tackles for a loss, a touchdown and a safety.

Jayden Olden, Monroe: had eight tackles, a forced fumble and fumble recovery in a 56-0 win over Central Davidson. Also an interception that he returned 37 yards.

Douglas Quarles, Corvian Community School: the junior wide receiver/defensive end had a monster game in Saturday’s 29-27 win over Covenant Day: 10 catches for 146 yards and two touchdowns on offense. On defense he had 10 tackles, three tackles for a loss and four sacks.

Cairo Skanes, Providence Day: junior defensive back had two interceptions, plus five tackles in the Chargers 42-35 win over Rock Hill Northwestern in the first-ever high school football game at Bank of America Stadium.

Jyron Tosi, Olympic: in a 42-0 win over West Mecklenburg, Tosi had 10 tackles, two pass breakups and a field goal block.

Khiyale Washington, Mountain Island Charter: in a 40-0 win over the Cabarrus Stallions, Washington had 14 tackles, two sacks, two punt blocks, a fumble recovery and an offensive carry for 24 yards.
