Vote for the Des Moines Register's male and female Athlete of the Week candidates Sept. 3-9

The third week of high school sports action for the 2022-2023 Iowa school year is complete.

Several talented athletes turned in outstanding individual performances during the third week.

On the boys side, there were several phenomenal performances during Week 3 of football and we had quality scores shot in golf. The girls saw excellent volleyball and swimming performances.

Both the boys and girls turned in some terrific times in cross country.

Here are the Register's top five candidates for Athlete of the Week for both the boys and girls. Readers will be able to choose their pick for the winners, who will be revealed at the end of next week.

Girls

Reese Winer, Ames

Winer automatically qualified for the girls state swimming and diving meet for Ames during the first-ever meet at the new Dan Flannery Pool in Ames on Sept. 6.

Winer qualified in the 100-yard breaststroke after swimming the fastest time in the state so far at one minute, 7.34 seconds.

Makala Hajek, Iowa City West

Hajek had a big meet for the Iowa City West girls swimming and diving team during a 146-40 dual meet victory over Waterloo West on Sept. 6.

Hajek won the 100 freestyle in 55.36 seconds and the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.04. She also took second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:05.18.

Adrienne Buettner-Cable, Des Moines Roosevelt

Buettner-Cable gave the Des Moines Roosevelt girls cross country team an individual runner-up at the 49th-annual Bobcat Invitational held at Marshalltown Community College on Sept. 8.

Buettner-Cable ran a 5-kilometer time of 18 minutes, 00.10 seconds to beat teammate Abi Hahn, the No. 12 runner in Class 4A, by 13.3 seconds for second behind top-ranked and defending 4A state champion Addison Dorenkamp of West Des Moines Valley.

Gabby Deery, Burlington-Notre Dame

Deery was explosive at the net for the No. 4 (1A) Burlington-Notre Dame volleyball team in victories over New London and Holy Trinity Catholic this past week.

Deery went for 23 kills on 36.4 % efficiency in four sets against Holy Trinity Catholic on Sept. 6. She also had eight digs, three blocks and two aces.

In a four-set win over New London on Sept. 8, Deery finished with 28 kills on 33.8 % efficiency. Deery added 14 digs and one block against the Tigers.

Monica Morales, West Liberty

Morales currently leads the state in digs for a West Liberty volleyball team ranked third in 3A.

She recorded 38 digs at 9.5 per set in a four-set victory over Mid-Prairie on Sept. 8. Morales was also 18 of 19 serving and she handed out eight assists in the victory.

Boys

Ty Cozad, Muscatine

Cozad had a phenomenal night running the football for Muscatine in a 37-34 victory over Bettendorf Friday night.

Cozad ranked up an amazing 391 yards rushing and four touchdowns for the Muskies. Cozad's rushing yardage is the best single-game mark in school history.

Cole Ritchie, Sioux City East

Ritchie threw for 445 yards and two touchdowns for Sioux City East, ranked eighth in Class 5A football Friday against LeMars.

Ritchie completed 35 of 48 passes in leading the Black Raiders to a 52-17 victory.

Jackson Heidesch, Dowling Catholic

The defending 4A boys cross country state champion ran an amazing race to win the Bobcat Invitational in Marshalltown on Sept. 8.

Heidesch managed to break 15 minutes to dominate the field at Marshalltown Community College. His time of 14:57.1 was 37 seconds faster than fifth-ranked Carson Owens of Southeast Polk.

Chase Lauman, Pella

Lauman broke 16 minutes for the Pella boys cross country team during the Grinnell Invitational on Sept. 6.

Lauman, ranked fourth individually in 3A, completed the 5K course in 15:58.5 to win the race by nearly 13 seconds over eighth-ranked Tommy Tyynismaa of Sout Tama County.

Drew Larson, Iowa City

Larson had a breakout game at quarterback for Iowa City in the Little Cy-Hawk game with Ames Friday at Iowa City.

Larson completed 16 of 19 passes for 259 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Little Hawkeyes to a convincing 55-9 victory over the No. 9 team in Class 5A.
