Kelly DeMeulenaere and Kenzie Reed are the Register's male and female Athletes of the Week

The Des Moines Register's Athletes of the Week for Jan. 16-22 have been chosen by the Register's readers.

Grand View Christian's Kelly DeMeulenaere was named Female Athlete of the Week and Cedar Rapids Kennedy's Kenzie Reed was the Male Athlete of the Week.

DeMeulenaere won a tight race with Bishop Garrigan's Audi Crooks for Female Athlete of the Week honors. DeMeulenaere received 44.71% of the vote (11,015 votes) and Crooks 44.36% (10,928).

DeMeulenaere posted a triple-double for Grand View Christian during a 78-49 victory over Collins-Maxwell on Jan. 16 in Ankeny. She dished out 16 assists and put up 13 points and rebounds apiece and added three steals and one block for the Thunder.

Reed ran away with the boys voting. He received 55.74% of the vote (4,065), with Estherville Lincoln Central's Owen Larson placing second with 28.79% (2,379).

Reed, the 4A assists leader, averaged 14.5 points, 8.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds for the top-ranked Cougars in victories over Cedar Rapids Prairie (64-27) and Dubuque Senior (66-44).

Reed had 18 points, nine assists, five rebounds and three steals against Prairie. He finished with 11 points, eight assists and three rebounds versus Dubuque Senior.
