Here’s how to vote early the House and Senate primaries in Hampton Roads

Ballots boxes will begin filling up again Friday as early voting for the June primary elections opens.

So we put together a handy guide on how to cast your vote ahead of time.

The early voting period will be open until June 17, and election day is June 20. Prior to then are several key dates:

  • May 5 — Early voting begins, as does the mailing of absentee ballots to military and overseas voters. Voters can request an absentee ballot for any reason at their local registrar’s office (addresses and hours listed below), by mail or online at vote.elections.virginia.gov/VoterInformation/Lookup/absentee.

  • May 30: Last day to register to vote or change your registered address. You can register online until 11:59 p.m., and in-person until 5 p.m. To register online, go to www.elections.virginia.gov/citizen-portal/. To register in-person, go to your local registrar’s office. You can also register at your local Department of Motor Vehicles office or contact a local political party or voter outreach organization.

  • June 9: Last day to request an absentee ballot be mailed to you. You can make a request until 5 p.m.

  • June 17: Last day of in-person early voting

  • June 20: Election day. Polling locations are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you are in line by 7 p.m., you will be able to vote. To find your polling place, visit vote.elections.virginia.gov/VoterInformation/Lookup/polling.

What to bring

It can be tricky for registered voters to figure out what to bring to the polls. Voter identification is required in Virginia, but if you show up without valid ID you can still submit a regular ballot if you sign a statement affirming your identity.

If you do not sign an ID statement, you can vote with a provisional ballot — which is reviewed separately by your local elections board to determine its validity.

Here’s a basic list, not exhaustive, of the acceptable forms of identification:

  • Virginia driver’s license, current or expired

  • Virginia DMV-issued ID card, current or expired

  • Valid employee ID with a photo of voter

  • U.S. military ID

  • Valid student ID with a photo of voter issued by a public or private higher education institution in the U.S.

  • Valid U.S. passport

  • Voter confirmation documents

  • Valid tribal enrollment or other tribal ID issued by one of the 11 tribes recognized by Virginia

  • Nursing home resident ID

  • Current utility bill, bank statement, government check or paycheck with the name and address of voter
