RESULTS: Gastonia, Shelby area high school Athletes of the Week (Jan. 16-20, 2023)

Here are the Gastonia and Shelby area’s top high school basketball players for the week of Jan. 16-20.

Our weekly top performers list and athlete of the week nominees are compiled from information provided to The Gaston Gazette and Shelby Star by coaches, athletic directors or team statisticians through emails, MaxPreps or mentioning @JoeLHughesII in game results and highlights posted to Twitter.

Boys basketball

Justin Ross, Hunter Huss

The Huskie senior standout earned 73% of last week's vote on his way to earning boys player of the week honors. During the week of Jan. 16-20, he racked up 24 points, eight rebounds and five steals in a 73-48 win over Ashbrook, Ross earned a double-double with 27 points and 21 rebounds in a 77-70 win over Crest.

A recent signee to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, to play football, Ross is among the reasons Huss in the playoff mix. The 6-3, 165-pound senior is averaging 18.1 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.7 steals this season.

Girls Basketball Player of the Week

Myla Hoover, Hunter Huss

The Hunter Huss junior received 62% of votes tallied en route to being named Gazette and Star girls hoops Player of the Week. During the week of Jan. 16-20, she finished with 20 points in a 44-42 overtime win at Ashbrook, following that effort with 27 points in a loss at Crest.

Huss is 14-6 overall, its 9-2 record in Big South 3A tying it for first with rival Ashbrook. Hoover leads the team with 16.2 points per game.
