Rock Hill Herald Fall Sports’ Athletes of the Week
Lily Ayer, Northwestern Swimming: The Trojans’ senior, co-captain won the 100 freestyle with an automatic state qualifier time of 59.12 in a meet with Andrew Jackson, Riverwalk Academy, South Pointe and York, Sept. 7.
Ayer, who was also runner-up in the 200 individual medley at the same meet, led the Northwestern girls’ team to victory in the five-team event at Rock Hill Aquatic Center.
Garrett Brown, South Pointe Cross Country: The Stallions’ senior ran a 16:01.40 to win the Trojan Invitational at Northwestern High, Sept. 9.
Brown’s efforts also helped the South Pointe boys’ cross country team to a third-place finish at Northwestern.
Weston Canty, Rock Hill Swimming: The Bearcats’ sophomore was runner-up in the 100 freestyle and third in the 50 freestyle, both in state consideration times, in a meet with Catawba Ridge and Clover, Sept. 5.
Canty also swam school record times to finish eight in the 200 freestyle and sixth in the 500 freestyle (automatic state qualifying time) at the Upstate Invitational at Fort Mill Aquatic Center, Sept. 9.
Alivia Cleveland, Fort Mill Cross Country: The Yellow Jackets’ sophomore ran an 18:27.80 to win the Trojan Invitational at Northwestern High by nearly one minute and 12 seconds over the field, Sept. 9.
Cleveland’s run also helped the Fort Mill girls’ cross country team to a 45-point victory at the same meet.
Cleveland had already won the Eye Opener and Champions’ Invitational earlier this season.
Kaity Coan, Clover Volleyball: The Blue Eagles’ senior helped Clover go 6-2 in the Rocky Top Classic Tournament to finish third-place of 64 teams at the event, Sept. 8-9.
Coan accounted for 21 kills, 40 digs, eight assists and seven aces in wins over Notre Dame, Model High, Madison Central and Bearden High.
Clover is 12-7 overall this season.
Max Conetta, Catawba Ridge Cross Country: The Copperheads’ junior ran a 17:11.70 to finish 20th overall at the Friday Night Lights’ Cross Country Festival at the Ivey Redmon Sports’ Complex in Kernersville, Sept. 8.
Conetta led his Catawba Ridge boys’ cross country team to fourth-place finish in “a stacked field,” according to Copperheads’ coach, Matt Osmulski.
Olivia Corbi, Fort Mill Swimming: The Yellow Jackets’ senor had a perfect day, winning the 200 freestyle, the 500 freestyle and helping both the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay, to account for 84 points, at the Upstate Invitational (with 18 teams, 536 swimmers), at the Fort Mill Aquatic Center, Sept. 9.
Corbi’s efforts led the undefeated, Fort Mill girls’ swim team to a dominant victory, scoring 359 points to win the Upstate Invitational.
Madilynn Robertson, Andrew Jackson Volleyball: The Volunteers’ senior had 53 assists, 13 digs and seven aces in two matches this week as Andrew Jackson beat York Prep, 3-0 (Sept. 5) and won 3-0 at Buford, Sept. 7.
Andrew Jackson is 3-1 overall this season.
Gracyn Root, Catawba Ridge Tennis: The Copperheads’ freshman won her No. 2 singles’ match 6-0, 6-0, as Catawba Ridge beat Lancaster, 6-0, Sept. 5.
Catawba Ridge is 3-0 this season.
Lydia Sasser, Northwestern Cross Country: The Trojans’ sophomore ran a personal-best 20:45.10 to finish sixth-place overall in the Trojan Invitational on her home course, Sept. 9.
Sasser’s run also helped the Northwestern girls’ cross country team to a runner-up finish at the same event.
Sasser also ran a 21:58.80 to finish first individually as Northwestern beat Spring Valley in a region meet, Sept. 5.
Bryanna Young, Legion Collegiate Volleyball: The Lancers’ had 48 kills, 12 digs and nine blocks in six matches as Legion Collegiate went 4-2 at the North Raleigh Christian “ Volley the Knights,” tournament, Sept. 8-9.
Young also 10 kills in a 3-0 win over Charlotte Country Day, Sept. 5.
Young has 94 kills, 58 digs, 17 blocks and 13 aces for Legion Collegiate (12-3) this season.
Robbie Ziel, Clover Swimming: The Blue Eagles’ sophomore won the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, with state consideration times in each event, in a tri-meet with Catawba Ridge and Rock Hill, Sept. 5.
Ziel also swam state consideration times to finish fourth in the 100 freestyle and third in the 100 backstroke at the Upstate Invitational at the Fort Mill Aquatic Center, Sept. 9.
