Below are the nominees for The Herald’s high school athlete of the week.

Malik Ashe, Rock Hill Basketball: The 6-foot senior scored 21 points in a 73-66, overtime win over Elevation Prep, Dec. 12.

Ashe also scored 20 points in a 49-46, overtime loss to South Pointe, Dec. 15.

Ashe is averaging 11 points per game for Rock Hill (3-7) this season.

Nas Berry, Fort Mill Basketball: The 6-foot-1 junior scored 25 points, had three rebounds and three assists in a 67-52 win at Christ Church Episcopal, Dec. 16.

Berry also scored 18 points, had three assists and three rebounds in a 58-48 victory at Northwestern, Dec. 15.

Berry started the week with 14 points, four rebounds and two assists in a 48-47 loss at Belmont South Point (NC), Dec. 12.

Berry is averaging 14.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.9 steals for Fort Mill (5-3) this season.

Nico Byrd, Legion Collegiate Basketball: The 5-foot-8 sophomore pulled double duty playing both the varsity and J.V. games against Camden Military Academy, Dec. 15.

Byrd had 28 points in a 66-32 win over Camden Military in the J.V. game, before scoring 14 more points in a 94-35 victory in the varsity game the same day.

Legion Collegiate (3-6) also lost to Chris School, 86-49, Dec. 12.

JaNyia Cunningham, South Pointe Girls’ Basketball: The 6-foot-1 freshman scored 19 points, grabbed 18 rebounds and had three blocks in a 56-48 win over rival, Rock Hill, Dec. 15.

Cunningham is averaging 18.7 points, 12.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists and one steal per game for South Pointe (5-2) this season.

Corey Dye, Jr., Northwestern Wrestling: The Trojans’ senior won the 120-pound title at the Pirate Invitational at Porter Ridge High, earning the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler honors, Dec. 16.

Dye, Jr., won his third straight tournament title and his third straight most outstanding wrestler award this season.

Dye, Jr. is 15-0 overall this season.

Zyan Hager, Catawba Ridge Basketball: The 6-foot-1 senior scored 25 points, had three rebounds, six assists and one steal in an 84-66 win over Belmont South Point (NC), Dec. 11.

Hager also scored 17 points, had two assists and three steals in an 84-51 victory over Nation Ford, Dec. 15.

Hager is averaging 18.3 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.8 steals per game for Catawba Ridge (8-1) this season.

Mike Jones, Indian Land Basketball: The 5-foot-10 sophomore had 31 points, seven rebounds and three steals in a 69-67 win over Nation Ford, Dec. 13.

Jones also scored 25 points in a 59-56 loss to Victory Christian, Dec. 16.

Jones is averaging 28.3 points, 2.2 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game for Indian Land (8-2) this season.

Ella Marker, Fort Mill Girls’ Basketball: The 6-foot-1 senior averaged 9.7 points, seven rebounds, 1.7 blocks and one steal per game in limited minutes in three wins this week as Fort Mill remained unbeaten at 8-0 this season.

Marker helped Fort Mill to three roads win at Belmont South Point (55-45, Dec. 12), at Northwestern (46-23, Dec. 15) and at Christ Church Episcopal (59-36, Dec. 16).

Brooke Taylor, Clover Girls’ Basketball: The 5-foot-6 senior scored 12 points, had seven assists, five steals and three rebounds in a 76-1 win over York, Dec. 15.

Taylor also scored 15 points to go with four rebounds, four steals and one assist in a 55-50 loss at Gaffney, Dec. 13.

Taylor had eight points, six assists and a steal in a 56-50 loss to Basketball Tasmania (Australia), Dec. 12.

Taylor is averaging 9.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 4.1 steals for Clover (7-2) this season.

Tamia Watkins, Andrew Jackson Girls’ Basketball: The 6-foot-1 junior scored 21 points, had 15 rebounds, eight assists, three steals and one block in a 69-36 win over Chesterfield, Dec. 15.

Watkins also scored 15 points and had 13 rebounds, three blocks, three assists and two steals in a 72-44 loss to Camden, Dec. 12.

Watkins is averaging 25.6 points, 10.6 rebounds, four steals, 3.9 assists and 1.9 blocks per game for Andrew Jackson (5-3) this season.
