Washington volleyball player voted Journal Star high school athlete of the week

Washington volleyball player Teriana Jones was voted as the Journal Star athlete of the week.

Jones earned 20 percent of the 1,144 votes, just edging out Pekin football player Kanye Tyler (19 percent).

Jones, a junior, put together a solid all-around effort as Washington finished second at the Macomb Tournament on Saturday. Jones, a 5-foot-9 outside hitter, posted 29 kills and 27 digs, while being named all-tournament team with her teammate Jori Dowling. The Panthers beat Moline Quad Cities Christian, West Prairie, Ridgewood and Macomb JV before losing to the hosts in the championship match.

Kanye Tyler, Pekin football

Tyler opened his senior season with a huge showing, scoring three touchdowns as the Dragons beat Rock Island, 56-20. The 6-foot, 180-pound running back scored from 11, 1 and 47 yards as part of 14 carries for 137 yards. He also had an interception that went 99 yards. Pekin heads to Belleville East (1-0) in Week 2.

Mason Boles, Eureka football

Boles rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns as Eureka opened the season by beating Canton, 25-7 on Friday. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound running back had 23 carries and two touchdowns, including a 3-yard score late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Eureka heads to Tremont on Friday for a Week 2 meeting in the Heart of Illinois Conference.

Kate White, Fieldcrest volleyball

Fieldcrest claimed the eight-team Hall Early Bird Tournament thanks to 58 assists from White over five matches. The 5-foot-5 junior setter dished out 72 kills between Allie Wiesenhofer (40 kills) and Kaylin Rients (32 kills) as the Knights capped a 5-0 day by beating Seneca 25-13, 25-22 in the title match on Saturday.

Isaiah Hill, Elmwood/Brimfield boys cross country

Hill set a new meet record in winning Friday's IVC Invitational at Three Park Sisters in Chillicothe. The senior's time was 15:54.2, topping the next closest runner by 39.5 seconds on the 3-mile course. His time helped the Trojans win the team title, 22-38 over Olympia. Brendan Williams (fifth, 17:41.3) and Mika Nelson (seventh, 17:45.1) joined Hill in the top 10.

Eileen Zopel, Peoria Notre Dame girls cross country

Despite a fourth-place finish, the senior helped the Irish edge Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin, 34-38 and win the Rocket Run for the Stars Invitational on Saturday. Zopel covered the 3-mile course at Bartonville's Alpha Park in 20:29.6. She was the first of three successive PND finishers as Julia Mingus (20:40.7) and Grace Yontz (20:45.4) took fifth and sixth, respectively. Meghan Zopel (ninth, 20:56.1) and Sarah Couri (17th, 22:12.0) rounded out PND's top five.

Carter Stevenson, Pekin boys golf

The senior helped Pekin (312) win last Monday's Limestone Invitational at Coyote Creek by eight strokes over runner-up Peoria Notre Dame (320). His 74 was tied for medalist honors with Normal U-High's Parker Newton. In Tuesday's 151-166 victory over Mid-Illini Conference foe Dunlap, Stevenson shot a 38 at Mt. Hawley Country Club was third among the Dragons, who saw Matthew Juergens (35) and Owen Gruden (36) finish first and second, respectively. On Saturday, Stevenson tied for medalist honors as Pekin finished fourth at Edwardsville Invite.

Ryleigh Moser, Canton girls golf

Moser fired a 3-over-39 on Wednesday and was the medalist in Canton's 175-239 win over ROWVA/Williamsfield at Wee-Ma-Tuk Hills Country Club. The senior shot a 42 on Tuesday and was a team-best at Pine Lakes in Morton, but the Little Giants (179) finished second behind Morton (170).

Andrew Bonham, Peoria Notre Dame boys soccer

The senior midfielder scored two goals in Monday's nonconference 3-0 road victory over Quincy Notre Dame. His goals were unassisted and came in the 12th and 65th minutes. Joel McIntyre made it a 2-0 match with a penalty kick goal in the 47th minute to complete the scoring for the Irish (1-0-0).

Kara Hofmann, Richwoods girls swimming and diving

The freshman made the most of her varsity debut, winning one individual event and helping with a trio of second places in Saturday's Big 12 Conference road meet with Normal Community. Hofmann won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:07.44 — 9.31 seconds ahead of the next finisher. She also was runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle (5:38.10), the 200-yard freestyle free relay (1:54.25) with Cate Lewis, Rachel Schussler and Hannah Soberinsky and teamed with the same trio in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:07.54).

Shikha Agarwal, Dunlap girls tennis

Dunlap's No. 1 singles player helped the Eagles be a three-time winner last week, capturing a pair of Mid-Illini Conference dual meets and winning a tournament. She didn't drop a game in the Mid-Illini matches, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 over her opponents from Pekin last Tuesday and Limestone on Thursday. Dunlap went to Algonquin and claimed Saturday's Jacobs Invitational by edging, Huntley, 24-22. The senior captured third place and dropped just one game in the match.
