East Peoria football player voted Journal Star high school athlete of the week

East Peoria football player Gabriel Zeigler-Harris was voted as the Journal Star athlete of the week.

Zeigler-Harris earned 26 percent of the 1,678 votes, beating out Metamora football player Kaden Hartnett (14 percent).

Zeigler-Harris, a senior running back, is a big reason behind East Peoria snapping its 26-game losing streak with a 32-26 win over Aurora Central Catholic on Friday. Zeigler-Harris scored five TDs on 173 yards. His TD total would have been seven had two not been called back due to holding. EP (1-1) now hosts Limestone (0-2) with hopes of ending a skid of 21 games in Mid-Illini Conference play.

The poll closed at noon Friday. Information about the nominees is below. The voting for next player of the week begins again Tuesday at pjstar.com. If you have a nominee for the honor, email us at sports@pjstar.com or tag us on Twitter @pjstarsports. Last week, Teriana Jones of the Washington volleyball team was named JS athlete of the week.

Kaden Hartnett, Metamora football

The senior quarterback rushed for 75 yards and two touchdowns as Metamora snapped a six-game losing streak with a 16-8 win over visiting LaSalle-Peru last Friday. Hartnett carried it 17 times including the game's first score — a 16-yard keeper with 5:19 left in the first quarter. His four-yard TD run just 5:28 before halftime put Metamora ahead 16-0. He finished with 85 passing yards on 5-for-11 passing.

Jacob Morin, Eureka football

Points came in bunches for Eureka in last Friday's 50-0 victory over Tremont. The senior quarterback completed 6-of-7 passes for 185 yards as the Hornets, ranked No. 7 in Class 3A, improved to 2-0 on the season. Morin hit Drew Dingledine for a 5-yard, first-quarter TD, then hooked up with Camron Manning for a 31-yard TD in the opening seconds of the second quarter.

Alayna Rudebeck, Limestone volleyball

The senior setter dished out 20 assists as Limestone went to Chillicothe and came away with a 25-22, 25-22 win over Illinois Valley Central on Wednesday. Rudebeck found junior Kennedey Barber for 10 kills in the match. This avenged a tie from last Saturday's Ottawa Tournament where a coin flip decided IVC winning the tournament.

Madyson Salisbury, Deer Creek-Mackinaw volleyball

The senior Libero was busy anchoring the Dee-Mack back row in two matches last week. Her 15-dig effort on Thursday helped the Chiefs get a Heart of Illinois Conference win over Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley. She added an ace as Dee-Mack won 25-17, 25-22. Salisbury started the week last Monday with eight digs in a two-set loss to Pleasant Plains.

Laurel Munson, Eureka girls cross country

The senior took first place in last Tuesday’s Metamora Early (Red)Bird Invite at Black Partridge Park. Munson ran the 2.94-mile course in 19:01.3, nearly 11 seconds faster than the runner-up finisher. Her victory helped give the Hornets, who edged out Peoria Notre Dame, 41-47, the win in the five-team team. Meika Bender (fourth, 19:49.1) and Claire Albertson (ninth, 20:16.8) rounded out the top 10 finishers for Eureka.

This marks Cox's second individual title this season, winning the Monmouth-Roseville Titan Invite on Aug. 26 where PCS took second as a team.

Lila Howard, Illini Bluffs girls golf

The senior golfer shot a career-low as Illini Bluffs set a new school record with a 176 at Gibson Woods on Wednesday. Howard's 38 paced two other career bests by junior Delaney O'Connor (45) and freshman Sara Finn (48) as the Tigers beat United (185), Orion (197) and Havana (210). Howard's 46 on Thursday helped IB beat Elmwood, 181-240 in the lowest round ever for the Tigers at Coyote Creek Golf Course in Bartonville.
