Metamora basketball player voted as Journal Star high school athlete of the week

Tyson Swanson of the Metamora boys basketball team was voted as the Journal Star athlete of the week.

Swanson, who earned 232 of the 539 votes, capped his week with a tournament MVP performance at the 11th annual Redbird Roundball Classic presented by Metamora. His 24 points in Saturday night's 61-59 win over South County (VA) completed a 3-0 run for the Redbirds in the tournament.

The senior scored 19 points in a 58-40 win over Manual on Saturday morning. He scored six points as Metamora cruised to a 77-47 tourney opening win over Chicago Bogan on Friday night. Swanson scored 14 points in last Monday's 2022 Class 3A state title game rematch win over Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin, 60-50.

Landon Modro, Fieldcrest boys basketball

Modro and the fifth-seed Knights made a run to the Heart of Illinois Conference Tournament title last week. The 6-foot-1 junior forward scored a game-high 21 points in a 48-44 victory over No. 2-seeded Eureka on Saturday. He scored eight points to knock off top-seed Lexington, 49-48 in Friday's semifinal. The Knights started off the week on Monday, beating El Paso-Gridley, 55-42 as Ed Lorton scored 20 and Modro added four.

Aaliyah Guyton, Peoria High girls basketball

The Division-I prospect shined in her two games last week, playing a pair of teams who shared the No. 3 ranking in Class 3A. Second-ranked Peoria High beat No. 3 Peoria Notre Dame 47-37 as Guyton scored nine of her game-high 19 points in the victory last Thursday. Despite a 48-41 loss to third-ranked Lincoln on Saturday, the 5-foot-10 junior guard scored 26 points and grabbed six rebounds.

Dalia Dejesus, Deer Creek-Mackinaw girls basketball

Dejesus helped Dee-Mack make school history by winning the program's first-ever Heart of Illinois Conference Tournament on Saturday. The 5-foot-11 freshman scored 12 points in a 52-17 title game win over Tremont. Her 21 points were a team-high in a 53-40 upset win over top-seed Fieldcrest in Thursday's semifinal. Her week started with a 15-point effort in a 43-27 quarterfinal victory over Heyworth on Monday.

Kannon Webster, Washington boys wrestling

The Illinois recruit cruised to the 145-pound title at Saturday's Mid-Illini Conference Tournament. Webster ran his record to 34-0 off the strength of three falls, totaling 4 minutes, 20 seconds. His title match ended in 72 seconds with a win over Morton's Steven Marvin. He beat David Pusey (1:48 fall) in the quarterfinals, then advanced to the finals by beating his semifinal opponent, Gabe Hodges from Limestone (1:20 fall).

Jack Morris, Dunlap boys swimming

Morris was a three-event winner in last Tuesday's dual meet against Galesburg. He won the 100-yard freestyle in 49.04 seconds, then took first place in two relays. The senior teamed with Nich Foster, Mitchell Wetherill and Joseph Kang in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:32.09) victory, then won the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:22.87) with Foster, Mitchell Wetherill and August Dornon. Morris, Foster, Kang and Levi Salverson also took second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:46.43) The Silver Streaks won the meet, 120-65.
