Casey Covart of Mountain Lakes voted Morris/Sussex Athlete of the Week for May 1-7

After four days of voting, Mountain Lakes senior centerfielder Casey Covart has been selected as the Morris/Sussex Athlete of the Week for May 1-7.

Covart was 4-for-7 with four walks, six stolen bases, got hit by a pitch, and scored four runs as Mountain Lakes defeated St. Elizabeth/Villa Walsh and Morristown Beard and lost to Glen Ridge. The Lakers' leadoff hitter, she got on base in nine of 12 at-bats. Covart also threw two runners out at third.

Ryan Beller

Morris Knolls junior goalie

Beller made 40 saves and allowed 18 goals as Morris Knolls went 2-1 last week. On Saturday, Beller made 22 saves in a 5-2 loss to Delbarton in a Morris County Tournament quarterfinal – the Green Wave's second-lowest total this spring.

Ryan Boyd

Chatham senior goalie

Boyd had six saves in a 15-4 defeat of Park Regional in a Morris County Tournament second-round game on May 3, and 15 saves in a 6-4 MCT upset by West Morris two days later.

Jeff Cianfrocca

Delbarton senior jumper/thrower

Cianfrocca cleared 6-foot-7, best in the high jump at Morris County Relays on April 4. It is the best in New Jersey so far, and tied Delbarton's school record from 1987. Cianfrocca also threw a personal best 130-1 to help the Green Wave discus team win the event, and was also part of the fifth-place triple jump relay.

Gabby Mariani

Madison freshman attack

Mariani had eight goals and an assist, four ground balls, nine draw controls and caused three turnovers as Madison went 1-1 last week, defeating Mount Olive and losing to Morristown.

Maddy Svenningsen

Roxbury senior outfielder

Svenningsen hit a three-run homer in the Gaels' defeat of Sparta on May 2, and singled and was hit by a pitch as Roxbury beat Morris Tech on May 3.

Jack Veith

Wallkill Valley sophomore first baseman/pitcher

Veith hit a two-run homer and walked twice, scoring two runs as Wallkill Valley beat Morris Tech, 7-5, on May 3. He also pitched 1⅓ scoreless innings with three strikeouts to earn the save. In the Rangers' 9-7 defeat of Jefferson on May 5, Veith was 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, and pitched three scoreless innings to earn the win.
