Kayla Vazquez of Kinnelon voted Morris/Sussex Athlete of the Week for Feb. 7-13

After four days of voting, Kinnelon sophomore wrestler Kayla Vazquez has been selected as the Morris/Sussex Athlete of the Week for Feb. 7-13.

The Colts sophomore, who finished third in the state as a freshman, became the program’s first girls region champion when she grabbed the 126-pound title on Saturday. Vazquez led 1-0 after two periods and was able to work to pin Boonton’s Julia Fongaro midway through the third in the final. She picked up two pins and a 10-4 decision over Elizabeth’s Sanyah Queen in the semis.

Here were the other nominees:

Brian Bienus

Mount Olive senior wrestler

The Marauders senior was undefeated in the postseason to help his team win the Group 4 title – Mount Olive’s first in program history. In the final against Brick Memorial, Bienus gave his team a three-point lead with a pin 25 seconds into the third period against the Mustangs’ Mike Angrosina. Bienus had four first-period pins during the Marauders’ tournament run.

Bryce Coesfeld

Kittatinny sophomore wrestler

The Cougars sophomore could be counted upon every step of the way as Kittatinny sealed a 23rd sectional title and reached the Group 1 final. He was 5-0 during the postseason, including a 4-3 decision over Delaware Valley’s Chris Colasurdo in the state final

Lucci Ferrara

Hackettstown senior forward

Ferrara averaged 11 points and 8.7 rebounds in Hackettstown's three-win week, including a 16-point, 10-rebound performance to beat Kittatinny, 37-34, in a Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex quarterfinal on Saturday.

Aaliyah Payne-Parris

Newton senior wrestler

The Braves’ 100-pounder became the program’s first female region champion by going 4-0 with three pins. She was named the North region’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. She pinned defending NJSIAA champion Isabella Santos of Elizabeth in the first period and avenged a loss to Paramus’ Olivia Klein with a 4-1 decision in the semifinals.

Giovanni Rivera

Morristown senior wrestler

The Colonials senior secured the 100th and 101st wins of his career this weekend during team victories against Madison and Secaucus. He is now third all-time in wrestling wins at Morristown.
