Each week, The News-Press staff will select one finalist in each high school sport. Nominees are derived from scores and stats emailed in by Lee County’s coaches during the week to sports@news-press.com. Readers can then vote in the online poll to determine who the Athlete of the Week will be.

The poll will be posted at news-press.com each Monday, and voting will end at 10 a.m. Thursday each week.

Last time, Fort Myers weightlifter Santiago Falkenhagen won the poll with 42% of the vote.

The winner will be announced on the @newspresssports Instagram page and on Twitter at @nphssports. The winning athlete will receive a shirt courtesy of BSN Sports.

Here are the nominees for March 27-April 1:

Boys track

Justin White, South Fort Myers

White placed first in the 400 meters and the long jump at the Cypress Lake Panther Invitational on Saturday. He also ran in the Wolfpack's winning 4x100 meter relay.

Girls track

V'Davrielle Johnson, Fort Myers

Johnson placed first in the high jump with a PR at the Wally Keller Invitational and came in third in the 200 meters. She was also a winner in the high jump at the Cypress Lake Panther Invitational on Saturday.

Baseball

Cole Ingole, SFCA

Ingole hit his fourth and fifth home runs of the season last week, scoring runs in each of the Kings' three games, including wins against Seacrest Country Day on Tuesday and Hardee on Friday.

Softball

Victoria Ash, Bishop Verot

Ash set a school record for strikeouts when she added 6 to her career total in the Vikings' 3-2 win against Lakewood Ranch on Wednesday. Against one of the top lineups in the state, Ash pitched all 7 innings, gave up 5 hits and did not give up an earned run.

Girls lacrosse

Ella Bernard, Cape Coral

Bernard scored 5 goals in the Seahawks' 15-4 win against Immokalee on Thursday. The team improved to 10-1 with two victories last week.

Boys weightlifting

Luke Buzzelli, Ida Baker

Buzzelli had the strongest traditional total at the Class 2A-District 14 meet on Wednesday. He won the 169-pound weight class and came in second in pound for pound.

Girls tennis

Hannah Holmes, North Fort Myers

Homes won her No. 3 singles match and No. 2 doubles match to help the Red Knights edge Ida Baker 4-3 on Thursday.
