Taniya Giles selected as the Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Week for Jan. 16-22

After four days of voting, Clifton senior thrower Taniya Giles has been selected as the North Jersey Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Week for Jan. 16-22.

Giles is slowly progressing towards the 35+ year school record in the shot put and her personal best 36-9 throw at the Garfield High jump/shot put invitational leaves her less than a foot short of the record.

Here were the other nominees:

Anneke Kuperus

Eastern Christian junior jumper

Kuperus has been a consistent high jumping standout from the first meet she entered two years ago. Monday, she won the high jump at the Garfield high jump/shot put meet.

Alex Manetovic

Fort Lee senior jumper

She's led North Jersey triple jumpers all year and finished fourth in that event at the New Balance Games. But her first attempt clearance at 5-2 in the high jump gave her the title in the high jump event and a spot in this poll.

Marisa Schoenberg

River Dell junior jumper

The Golden Hawks are developing a terrific jumping team and Schoenberg set a personal best in winning the varsity triple jump at the Armory Frosh-Novice meet, moving up the Golden Hawk all-time list.

Casey Sullivan

Demarest senior thrower

Last spring's top New Jersey shot putter has started out her first indoor season as the top thrower in New Jersey and one of the best in the country with a huge 44-11 throw at the Garfield High jump/shot put meet.
