HENDERSONVILLE - To celebrate Black History Month, USCellular is holding its first-ever Black History Month Art Contest with Boys and Girls Clubs all across the country, and the Boys and Girls Club of Henderson County is one of nine clubs in North Carolina competing.

According to a news release, members of the Boys and Girls Club of Henderson County created original pieces of artwork representing influential Black STEM icons. These included historical figures, world leaders, scientists and educators who have made vital contributions to the world of science, technology, engineering and math.

USCellular associates worked with the Boys and Club members in January to begin their drawings. A representative from USCellular said the names of the children weren't posted with the artwork to keep the voting focused on creativity.

These are the 12 states that have clubs competing: North Carolina, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Ten finalists were chosen from each Boys and Girls Club, and the top three from each club will be awarded prize money as follows: $250 for first place, $150 for second place and $100 for third place.

Voting is now open at this link: https://newsroom.uscellular.com/uscellular-2023-black-history-month-art-contest/. To vote for art submissions by the Boys and Girls Club of Henderson County, voters can scroll down to North Carolina and then to Hendersonville to vote.

The 10 finalists from the Boys and Girls Club of Henderson County were chosen by club representatives based on creativity, quality, interpretation, clarity of theme and overall impression, the release said. Voting will remain open through Feb. 28, and anyone 18 or older can vote.

Winners will be announced on March 8, and an award presentation will be held at 4 p.m. that day at the Boys and Girls Club of Henderson County located at 1304 Ashe Street in Hendersonville. The Henderson County finalists’ artwork is also currently digitally displayed at USCellular’s Hendersonville location at 1900 Four Seasons Boulevard.
