Record Athlete of the Week: Franklin's Parker Burks

Parker Burks, a senior pitcher for Franklin was voted by readers as The Record/Recordnet.com Athlete of the Week for the week of March 19-25. In an online poll that closed today, Burks received over half of the total 400 votes around 51.1% of votes casted.

Burks threw a complete game against the Yellowjackets' rival Stagg and struck out five batters throughout the game. He only allowed two runs in his first win of the season. Offensively, Burks has been consistent for Franklin. In its most recent win against McNair Burks finished with two hits, two RBIs and a run on three plate appearances.

  • Feb. 25: Taydem Khamjoi, Chavez wrestling and Eli Terpsma, Ripon Christian boys basketball

  • March 4: Jordan Lee, St. Mary's girls basketball and Elijah Mobley, Weston Ranch boys basketball

  • March 18: Sophia Coronado, Kimball softball and Joel Van Groningen, Ripon Christian boys volleyball

Original story: It’s time to hear from The Record/Recordnet.com readers as the polls for Athlete of the Week are open.

Readers can now vote for their favorite San Joaquin, Calaveras, and Amador counties athlete for the week of March 19-25. Voting can be done at the newspaper’s website, recordnet.com.

Polls close on Friday.

Here are the choices for March 19-25 (Athletes listed in alphabetical order):

Parker Burks, baseball, Franklin: With Burks on the mound, Franklin beat its long-time rival Stagg, 5-2 on March 23. He struck out five batters and only allowed two runs to earn his first win of the 2022-23 season. Offensively, Burks finished with a hit and an RBI.

Shanye Harris, track and field, Edison: Harris set a personal record in the 400-meter at the Bear Creek Port City Invitational on March 25. She finished with a time of 1 minute and 3 seconds to take eighth place. The junior also took first place in the 4x100 relay as the third leg of the team beating out 29 other schools.

Y’vette Harris, track and field, Lincoln: The senior hurdler had a field day at the Thunder Invitational on March 25. She set a personal record in 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.90 seconds taking first place in the event. She also took first place in the 300-meter event.

Makenzie Nervis, softball, East Union: Nervis led the Lancers to a big 3-0 win against the reigning Division II CIF State Champions, Lincoln on March 24. The junior finished the game with a home run, two RBIs, and a run on four plate appearances.

Abraham Palacios, boys volleyball, Weston Ranch: Palacious helped the Cougars to a 3-0 sweep against Stagg on March 21. The junior outside hitter finished with a game-high 10 kills. Serving wise he made no errors on 16 serves and had four aces.

Yosef Poblano, track and field, West: Poblano competing against 28 teams in the Castro Valley Relays on March 25. He took home gold in the 100 meters and set a personal record with a time of 10.78 seconds. He beat out second-place by half a second.

Athlete of the Week nominations is based on information available to The Record. All high school varsity players from San Joaquin, Calaveras, and Amador counties. Nominations must be received for consideration by Monday morning following that week's games.
