Vote now for the Vermont Varsity Insider Athletes of the Week: Ballots for Dec. 26-31

Welcome to the first installment of the 2022-23 winter season for the Vermont Varsity Insider Athletes of the Week voting by high school sports fans.

This week, and every week during the three sports seasons, members of the public may vote for a top girls athlete and a top boys athlete.

How do I cast my vote?

All voting is through the two ballots at burlingtonfreepress.com. We will not accept votes through email or through social media.

Voting began Monday, Jan. 2, and continues through 11:59 p.m. Thursday.

How do we learn who wins?

The two winners will be announced in a story published at burlingtonfreepress.com on Friday.

May I nominate a deserving athlete for a future ballot?

Girls Athlete of the Week nominees

More about each candidate:

Sabine Brueck, North Country basketball/indoor track: The sophomore standout averaged 13.3 points a game over three wins last week, including an 18-point outing in the 59-37 triumph over Lyndon. Brueck also won long jump (16-4.75) and triple jump (34-3.5) at an indoor track and field meet held at the University of Vermont.

Kassidy Haley, Woodstock girls hockey: In a rematch of last year's Division II final, Haley helped defending champ Woodstock topple Hartford 7-5 with a three-goal, two-assist performance. Then on her birthday, she tallied two goals and one helper in a 3-0 win over Rice.

Anna Moser, Rutland basketball: The freshman sharpshooter scored 11 points in a 57-38 win over Burlington and then tallied 14 points in 39-26 win over Rice.

Sydney Perry, Windsor basketball: Perry racked up 19 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks in a 58-22 win over Fall Mountain (N.H.). She then struck for nine points, 21 boards, six blocks and five assists in a 56-31 decision over White River Valley.

Erin Sears, Middlebury hockey: At the home holiday tournament, the freshman supplied a hat trick in a 5-0 win over U-32 and then a one-goal, one-assist game in a 3-0 besting of Harwood.

Boys Athlete of the Week nominees

Eli Brace, Vergennes wrestling: Brace captured the 132-pound division at the 50th annual Hubie Wagner Invitational to earn the meet's outstanding wrestler award.

Tyler Rivard, Hazen basketball: The Wildcat big man broke the program record for most points in a game with a 50-point outburst against Enosburg. In the 88-64 win, he also had 21 rebounds and five assists. In an encore performance, Rivard scored 27 points and totaled 20 boards and five steals in a 59-26 victory over Peoples.

Riley Severy, Spaulding basketball: Severy recorded a double-double of 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead Spaulding past Mount Abraham 77-39. He had another double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds) in the Crimson Tide's big win over defending Division II champion Montpelier.

Tosh Swan, Burlington hockey: The sophomore defenseman registered two goals and two assists in the Seahorses' 9-0 road victory at Northfield.

Tucker Tharpe, Champlain Valley basketball: The junior forward posted a pair of 19-point efforts to help the Redhawks run past Mount Mansfield 62-48 and then edge St. Johnsbury 55-50.
