Here are the nominees for The Charlotte Observer high school athlete of the week.

This week’s nominees

Garret Chase, North Iredell soccer: The Raiders’ senior scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win at Montgomery Central in the first round of the 3A state playoffs Oct. 30. Chase also had a goal in a 5-2 victory over Jay M. Robinson in the second round of the playoffs. Nov. 2.

Preston Cock, Community School of Davidson soccer: The Spartans’ senior forward scored two goals and had one assist in 6-0 win in the first round of the 2A state playoffs Oct. 30. Cock also had two goals and two assists in a 6-0 win over McMichael in the second round Nov. 2. Cock set a new school record with 35 goals to go with eight assists for Community School of Davidson (19-2-1) this season.

David Firestone, Marvin Ridge cross-country: The Mavericks’ junior ran a 15:52.28 to finish ninth at the NCHSAA 4A state championships at Ivey Redmon Sports’ Complex in Kernersville Nov. 4. Firestone helped Marvin Ridge win the team title.

Ty Fritts, Hickory Ridge soccer: The Ragin’ Bulls’ senior forward scored both goals in a 2-1 win over North Mecklenburg in the first round of the 4A state playoffs Oct. 30. Fritts also had an assist in a 5-0 second round win over Northwest Guilford.

Carter Mammano, Stuart Cramer socceer: The Storm senior scored two goals in a 4-1 win over North Davidson in the first round of the 3A state playoffs Oct. 30. Mammano also had the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory at Asheboro in the second round Nov. 2.

Blake Nicholson, Christ the King cross-country: The Crusaders’ junior ran a 15:36.84 to win the 1A state championship at Ivey Redmon Sports’ Complex in Kernersville Nov. 4. Nicholson, who won by nearly 30 seconds over the field, also led his Christ the King cross country team to a fifth-place finish at states.

Eli Petko, Weddington soccer: The Warriors’ senior forward had one goal in a 2-1 win over Marvin Ridge in the first round of the 4A state playoffs Oct. 30. Petko also scored a goal and had an assist in a 6-2 overtime win over Hough in the second round.

Jack Ramanata, Pine Lake Prep soccer: The Pride junior had one goal and three assists in a 6-1 first round playoff win over Burns Oct. 30. Ramanata also had two goals in a 3-1 victory over Monroe in the second round Nov. 2.

Sam ter Linde, Lake Norman soccer: The Wildcats’ senior defender had the game-winning goal in the third overtime to give Lake Norman a 1-0 win at Grimsley in the second round of the 4A state playoffs Nov. 2

Thomas Wlazlowski, Cuthbertson cross-country: The Cavaliers’ senior ran a 15:39.92 to finish third at the 4A state championship at Ivey Redmon Sports’ Complex in Kernersville Nov. 4. Wlazlowski’s third-place finish was the highest ever for a Cuthbertson boys’ runner at the state championship.

Aaron Zhu, Independence Soccer: The Patriots’ senior forward both goals in 2-1 first round 4A state playoff win at West Cabarrus Oct. 30. Zhu also had two goals in a 3-1 second round win at West Forsyth Nov. 2.
