Vote for the Observer offensive, defensive HS football players of the week

Meet the nominees for the Charlotte Observer’s high school football offensive and defensive players of the week.

Readers can vote as often as they want until Friday, Oct. 22, around noon.

Offensive player of the week nominees

Mason Avery, West Lincoln: In a 35-12 win over West Caldwell, Avery was dominant on both sides of the ball. On offense, he ran 36 times for 236 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught an 18-yard pass. On defense, he had seven tackles, two sacks.

Xavion Brower, Butler: In Friday’s 28-21 win over Charlotte Catholic, the senior QB was 9-of-12 passing for 139 yards and a touchdown, plus 10 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown.

Sebastian Brown, Mooresville: completed 12-of-23 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns in a 50-14 win over West Cabarrus. He also had a rushing touchdown.

Concord High offensive line: Will Howard, Joey Reali, Caius Hartsell, Bryant Cruz, Bryson Overcash and Justin Garland paved the way for 412 yards rushing in a 48-14 win over Northwest Cabarrus. Concord ran 52 run plays and no passing plays. Three different running backs scored six times. In the last five games, this group has helped Concord rush for 1,923 yards.

Tony Gainey, Anson County: ran nine times for 80 yards, averaging nine yards per carry, in a 39-27 win over Covenant Day. He caught two passes for 84 yards. He caught a touchdown pass and had a touchdown run. Anson rallied from a 13-0 deficit to win.

Antonio Jackson, Concord: 26 carries for 207 yards and two touchdowns in a 48-14 win over Northwest Cabarrus. After an 0-2 start, the Spiders (5-2) have won five straight games.

Isaac Lee, Robinson: 13-0f-15 for 215 yards, seven touchdowns in an 82-8 win over Union Academy.

Noah Loeblein, West Rowan: 15-of-21 passing for 371 yards and six touchdowns, a new school-record, in Friday’s 57-13 win over Central Cabarrus.

Grantt Logan, Providence Day: In a 48-47 overtime win over Charlotte Christian, Logan was 17-of-25 for 206 yards and four touchdowns. He ran the ball 14 times for 97 yards and a touchdown. He also had four punts for a 39-yard average.

Marquies McCombs, Chase: in a 31-13 win over Polk County, McCombs ran 26 times for 241 yards and two touchdowns. He had 208 yards in the second half.

Austin McConnell, Mountain Island Charter: in a 47-0 win over Bishop McGuinness, McConnell, a senior, had two field goals, five made extra points and four kickoffs totaling 199 yards.

Syndey McCorkle, Providence Day: after her team blocked Charlotte Christian’s PAT in overtime, McCorkle made one to lift the Chargers to a 48-47 win over the reigning state champions.

Jacob Newman, South Mecklenburg: ran for 243 yards on 34 carries and three touchdowns in a 31-29 come-from-behind win over Olympic.

Caleb Titherington, Metrolina Christian: eight catches for 127 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-7 win over High Point Christian.

Jaxson Wilkerson, South Caldwell: 30 carries for 212 yards and six touchdowns in a 51-27 win over Alexander Central.

Defensive player of the week nominees

Jason Chambers, Butler: fourth quarter interception prevented Charlotte Catholic from a scoring a potential game-winning field goal or touchdown. His 30-yard return off the turnover helped set up winning points in a 28-21 win that clinched a league title. Chambers also had three catches for 39 yards.

GW Clemmer, Butler: 14 tackles, QB hurry in Friday’s 28-21 win over Charlotte Catholic.

Jakob Craver, Mount Pleasant: seven tackles, 2.5 sacks in Friday’s 42-0 win over Albemarle.

Liam Groulx, Providence Day: nine tackles, nine assists plus three catches for 49 yards and a touchdown in a 48-47 win over Charlotte Christian in overtime.

Zayvion Lloyd, Olympic: in Friday’s 31-29 loss to South Mecklenburg, Lloyd had nine tackles, two for a loss, and an interception.

Trevin Moyer, Mountain Island Charter: In Friday’s 47-0 win over Bishop McGuinness, Moyer had four tackles, plus two interceptions, one of which he returned 95 yards for a touchdown. He had 142 return yards on his interceptions.

Carson Parker, Providence Day: eight solo tackles, eight assists, QB hurry in Charlotte Christian win.

Will Price, Draughn: in a 32-2 win over Rosman Friday, Price had eight tackles, two pass breakups and two interceptions. He returned both intercpetions for touchdowns, covering 41- and 66-yards. He has five interceptions this season, a new school-record, and he has returned three for touchdowns.

Jack Smith, Pine Lake Prep: seven tackles, including five for a loss, plus two sacks for the freshman defensive lineman in a 30-6 win over Carver.

Hudson Stalun, PIne Lake Prep: 16 tackles in 30-6 win over Carver. Four of his tackles were for a loss. Stalun has a 4.5 GPA.
