Vote for Record Athlete of the Week (Oct. 24-31)

With fall sports approaching playoffs, The Record is once again searching for the Athlete of the Week for the week of Oct. 24- 31 .

Below are the six candidates and their contributions to their respective sports. The athlete that receives the most votes will be highlighted as The Record’s Athlete of the Week. Voting will close at noon on Thursday Nov. 3.

Jose Aguilar
Quarterback, Weston Ranch (Junior)

Weston Ranch took on Franklin in Week 9 of prep football and was led by Aguilar to a whopping 51-0 victory. Aguilar completed 9 of 12 pass attempts for 272 yards and four touchdowns. He also tacked on a rushing touchdown. After this performance, the 5-foot 10-inch junior leads the team in passing touchdowns so far this season, 15.

Jacob Chacon
Water polo, St. Mary’s (Senior)

Chacon was a key on offense in the Rams' recent dominating 23-1 win vs. Tokay. He scored eight total points for St. Mary’s, three of their goals, five assists, and two steals. This was the second time this season that Chacon scored eight points during a match. He leads the team in shots, points and goals.

Chole Lemons
Outside hitter, Tracy (Senior)

Lemons was a huge asset on offense for Tracy in its most recent win over West, a 3-0 sweep. She finished the match with 20 kills, 13 digs, and only made three attacking errors on 39 attempts. Lemons averages 4.4 kills per set and in the past eight matches has reeled in double-digit kills.

Rosa Morales
Tennis, Franklin (Senior)

The Yellowjackets' final match for the 2022-23 season pitted them against Linden on Oct. 25. Morales was among the singles players to help Franklin win 7-1 to close out the season with a win. She took on senior Ava Pazzanese in a singles match and beat her 6-0 and 6-2 to secure a point for the Yellowjackets.

Blake Nichelson
Running back, Manteca (Senior)

In Week 9’s matchup vs. Central Catholic, Nichelson was near unstoppable rushing for a school-record 400 yards on 25 carries. The 6-foot-2-inch senior also matched his school record by scoring seven touchdowns in the Buffaloes' 56-49 loss to the Raiders. He leads the team in total touchdowns, receiving yards per game and rushing yards per game.

Jordan Vander Veen
Outside hitter, Ripon Christian (Junior)

Vander Veen was the lead attacker in Ripon Christian’s win, a sweep vs. Le Grand. She only made two errors on 19 attack attempts to finish the match with 12 kills, six aces, and eight digs. The 5-foot 9-inch junior will be an essential offensive weapon for the Knights in their playoff run.

All high school varsity players from San Joaquin, Calaveras and Amador counties are eligible to be placed on the ballot. Nominations must be received by Monday morning following that week's games for consideration.
