Record Athlete of the Week: Lodi's Andrew Wright

Andrew Wright, a senior pitcher for Lodi was voted by the readers as The Record/Recordnet.com Athlete of the Week for the week of March 26- April 1. In an online poll that closed today, Wright received over 3,000 votes out of the close to 5,000 votes. He earned 65% of the votes casted.

The senior pitcher had a hand in the Flames winning series against St. Mary's last week. He pitched in the final game of the series on March 31 as the Rams and Flames spilt the first two games. His at bat in the final inning ended with a walk-off RBI to push his team into the lead.

Wright also came in to close the game as the pitcher and secure Lodi's win with a 1,2,3 inning and one strikeout. He his currently ranked third in the Tri-City Athletic League for most batters struck out.

Readers can vote for their favorite San Joaquin, Calaveras, and Amador counties athletes who have shined the previous week. Voting can be done at the newspaper’s website, recordnet.com.

Here are the candidates for March 26- April 1 (Athletes listed in alphabetical order):

Kharime “Mims” Caratachea, softball, Ripon: Caratachea gave Manteca batters a hard time at March 27th’s game. She finished the game by striking out nine batters and only allowed one run to get past. She helped give the Buffaloes their first loss of the season, 6-1.

Kori Fields, track and field, St. Mary’s: In her first track meet of the season, Fields set a personal record in the 100 meters race with 12.86 seconds. She took first in that event and the 200 meters and 100-meter hurdles to have a stellar finish in the Tokay Meet on March 30.

Rayana Ladd, softball, Manteca: Ladd had an outstanding game on the plate in Manteca’s league opener against Sierra on March 30. She finished the game with three runs, two RBIs, and a home run on four plate appearances to help the Buffaloes win 12-4.

Dom Samford, baseball, Lincoln: Samford shut down Tracy’s offense on the mound in the March 30 game. The right-handed pitcher held the Bulldogs scoreless, only allowing them two hits. He utilized Lincoln’s run support and helped it win 10-0.

Cameron Williams, track and field, West: Williams helped lead his 4x100 relay to victory on March 30 at the Tokay Meet. Williams was the team’s anchor and beat out Tokay, St. Mary’s, and Lodi with a time of 42.70 seconds. The junior also took first place in the 110-meter hurdles setting a season record of 15.31 seconds.

Andrew Wright, baseball, Lodi: Wright had a hand in completing Lodi’s two-game sweep against Tri-City Athletic League foe St. Mary on March 31. The senior pitched for eight innings and struck out 11 batters. Offensively, he hit the walk-off RBI in the seventh inning to secure the Flames' 2-1 victory.

Athlete of the Week nominations are based on information available to The Record about all high school varsity players from San Joaquin, Calaveras, and Amador counties. Nominations must be received for consideration by Monday morning following that week's games.
